I Really Want to Love Cordless Straighteners. Do They Actually Work? Not Quite Yet.

I'm going to be honest with you: I want cordless irons to win.

I live between three countries. I'm on a plane most weeks. I've styled hair in hotel rooms with one socket behind a bed, backstage in rooms with no plug within ten metres, and in flats where the only mirror is nowhere near the electrics. A tool that just works, anywhere, with no cable to fight — that's not a gimmick to me, that's my actual life.

So every time a new cordless iron lands, I buy it, I use it, and I want to report back that we're there.

We're not there. Not quite. And it's worth explaining exactly why, because the reason isn't bad engineering — it's physics, and physics doesn't care how much I want it.

The problem, in one paragraph

A UK socket will hand a straightener 50 to 120 watts continuously, all day, without breaking a sweat. A lithium battery small enough to sit in a handle you can hold holds a fixed, modest amount of energy — and heat is the greediest thing you can ask any device to do. Motors sip power. Screens sip. Heating elements gulp.

That's it. That's the whole story. A cordless iron is trying to do the most power-hungry job in consumer electronics from the smallest sensible energy store. Everything you feel in the hand comes from that one sentence.

What that actually feels like when you use one

It takes longer to get going. A mains iron is ready in ten or twenty seconds. Battery tools generally take longer, because pulling that much power that fast is hard on the cells and hard on your runtime.

It doesn't hold temperature the same way. This is the one that gets discussed least and matters most. A mains iron sits at its target all day. A battery tool is fighting a falling voltage as the pack drains — the good ones compensate cleverly, the cheap ones simply run cooler as you go. If your cordless iron feels brilliant for the first five minutes and mysteriously stops smoothing near the end, that's not your technique. That's the battery.

Recovery is the weak point. Recovery — how fast the plate gets back to temperature after cold, thick hair pulls the heat out of it — is the single most important performance figure in any iron, and it's a burst-power problem. Burst power is exactly what a battery has to ration.

Runtime is short, and honestly so. ghd's Unplugged is rated at around 20 minutes of styling per charge, which they frame as roughly four to five days of daily use. I actually respect that number — it's an honest one, and it tells you what the tool is for.

Even the plates are smaller. The Unplugged runs slightly narrower plates than ghd's mains range, around 22.5mm. That's not styling philosophy, that's the battery talking: less plate means less mass to heat means longer runtime. The physics is quietly dictating the shape of the tool.

The bit I genuinely love: USB-C

Here's where I get enthusiastic again, because the shift to USB-C is the best thing to happen to this category.

One cable for my iron, my phone and my laptop. Power banks work. And — this is the bit nobody talks about — the whole international voltage nightmare simply evaporates. A corded UK iron on 110V won't hold its temperature; a 110V iron on UK mains can be destroyed. A USB-C cordless tool doesn't care what country it's in. For anyone living the way I do, that's not a small thing.

Two habits: charge it fully before you travel rather than trying to top up in a hotel bathroom, and don't leave it flat in a drawer for months. Lithium cells hate sitting empty, and capacity lost that way doesn't come back.

Flying with one

This is why a lot of people buy cordless in the first place, so let's be precise.

Corded irons have no battery and are generally fine in hand luggage or the hold. Cordless irons contain a lithium-ion cell, and lithium batteries are treated as a different class of item entirely — UK Civil Aviation guidance generally allows the small packs in these tools in hand luggage, and the principle across airlines is that lithium batteries travel in the cabin rather than the hold, so any problem happens where someone can deal with it. ghd markets the Unplugged as flight-safe for exactly this reason.

Rules vary by airline and they change, so check your carrier before you fly rather than trusting a blog — including mine.

Where cordless genuinely earns its place

I don't want any of the above to read as dismissive, because there are jobs where I reach for cordless without hesitation.

Touch-ups — a fringe, a few pieces around the face, a flyaway before you walk into a room. Travel, especially with the voltage problem gone. Backstage and on location, where sockets are scarce and cables are a hazard. And any bathroom where the plug is in the wrong place, which is most of them.

Where it doesn't earn its place: a full head of long, dense or coarse hair. That job needs sustained power and fast recovery over ten or fifteen minutes of continuous work, and a battery can't promise either. Ask a cordless iron to do it and you'll end up making extra passes to compensate for a plate quietly running below target — which is more heat exposure, not less.

That's the cordless trap, and it's worth naming: a tool designed for convenience, used for a job that punishes hair.

If you're buying one anyway

Look for: a stated temperature in numbers, and ask what happens to it at 80% battery depletion. Honest published styling time — twenty minutes is realistic, be suspicious of anything wilder. USB-C, universal cables, nothing proprietary to lose. A charge indicator you can read at a glance, because a cordless iron running low is an iron running cool. Explicit flight-safety guidance from the manufacturer. Plate geometry matched to the job — accept it'll be narrower, and buy it for touch-ups accordingly.

My honest verdict

Buy a cordless iron as your second iron — for travel, for touch-ups, for the places a cable can't go — and it's a small luxury that genuinely earns its space in the bag. I've got one. I use it. I'm glad it exists.

Buy it as your only iron for a full head of thick hair and the physics will let you down, and your hair will pay for it in extra passes.

And when battery energy density finally catches up — and it will, this whole category is one materials breakthrough away from being brilliant — I'll be first in the queue, and I'll write the follow-up gladly. Until then: love the idea, use it for what it's actually good at.

As always, the least damaging iron in the world is still the one you don't reach for every single morning.
