For hairdressers
and the trade.

Texture is one craft with two directions, and I have been putting it on real heads since 1991. I teach it — every product on the market, no brand attached. Learn it properly, or hire my judgement.

The Zoltan teCsture Scale™

The Scale is the assessment.

Every service stands or falls on one question: what can this hair take? The Zoltan teCsture Scale™ answers it in one code — pattern, frizz and condition, read in the chair.

z3 f2-NND

Two codes and you know. Write the code for the hair in front of you, then write the code for where she wants to go — and you can see whether it's achievable before anything is mixed. It's free, it's open, and it has its own page that explains the whole system.

Read the Scale

It also comes as a PDF made for the wall — print it, pin it in the dispensary or the colour room, always at arm's reach. That is at tecsture.com.

And if you want it working on your own salon's website — the chart and the client quiz, built in, your clients reading their own code — ask me at tecsture.com and I'll tell you how that works.

What's here

Two things, both free.

The teCsture Scale™

Three readings, one code. How I read a head before anything is agreed — and a printable chart for the dispensary wall, at tecsture.com.

A bit of teaching

There are only two directions. Down, and up.

The Scale tells you what the hair is. Down and up are what we do to it. Assess first, then choose the direction.

A down takes curl, wave or frizz out. An up puts curl, movement or volume in. That is the whole market, and there are no treatment names in it. You understand the chemicals, and you decide which one gets you there.

Start there and the conversation gets short. Which way are we going? Then only two questions are left: how far, and how long.

And sometimes the answer is a third one: not yet. Some hair can't take a direction until it's been repaired — and that's exactly what the Scale is for. Assess first, and you know before you mix anything whether this head is a down, an up, or a rebuild.

How far

Three kinds, either direction. You already know their names.

Semi, demi and permanent mean something exact to every hairdresser alive, because that is how colour works. Texture behaves the same way — so I use the same three words, and nobody has to be taught anything new.

The difference between them is how many levels they move the pattern. Read the hair, write the code, then write the code for where she wants to go. The gap between the two numbers tells you which kind of service you are actually talking about.

KindMoves the patternWhat happens to the hairHolds
SemiAbout one levelSits on the surface. Takes the frizz, keeps the pattern. Nothing is changed, so nothing grows out.6–10 weeks
DemiTwo to five levelsGoes just inside. Genuinely moves the pattern — moved, not removed — then drifts away. No bad month five.4–6 months
PermanentFour to seven levelsChanges the hair itself. It does not fade; it grows out with a line at the root, and I say so out loud.Permanent

The ranges overlap on purpose. Four levels sits inside both demi and permanent, because distance alone was never enough to choose — the condition, and what she is willing to commit to, decide the rest.

An up comes in the same three kinds. Same words, same ladder, same conversation — the number simply moves the other way. How far you are going and how long she wants it to last are still the two questions, and the answer to both is semi, demi or permanent.

KindMoves the patternWhat she seesHolds
SemiAbout one levelMovement you can feel more than see.1–3 months
DemiTwo to five levelsCurl that arrives as the hair dries. Softest wet, curliest dry.4–6 months
PermanentFour to seven levelsCurl that is there wet and dry.6+ months

One thing is different going up: it does not wash out. Every up changes the hair itself, so it grows out rather than fading away. Going down she can try it gently first. Going up, she commits — say that before she sits down and you will never have that argument later.

Price the level of change, not the bottle.
