Digital Perm Machines
A digital perm machine is a processor with rods plugged into it, one cable each, run in heating cycles rather than one continuous bake — and it is built by a very small number of firms in Japan and Korea.

A processor, and rods on the end of cables
Strip away the name and a digital perm machine is a simple thing. There is a control unit — floor-standing on a trolley, or a smaller box that sits on a bench — with a screen and a bank of sockets. Into those sockets go the rods. Each rod is a hollow former with a low-voltage heating element inside it and a flex running back to the unit, so a full head is a head with thirty or forty thin cables coming off it.
Everything that distinguishes this hardware from a hot roller or a curling wand comes from the cable: the rod is not holding heat it was given earlier, it is being driven, monitored and adjusted while the hair is on it.
That is the whole engineering argument. A heated tool with no cable is a battery of stored warmth that starts falling from the moment it leaves the heater, so the first rod wound and the last rod wound have entirely different histories by the time the set is finished. A driven rod does not drift. It also means the operator can hold different parts of the head at different settings, which matters on any real client: the nape is not the same hair as the crown, a fringe is usually finer than the rest, and the sides on a man’s head are frequently shorter and newer than the top.
The third component nobody photographs
Insulation. A pad of felt or dense fabric goes between every rod and the scalp — not most rods, every rod — and it is the only thing standing between warm hardware and skin. Pads are consumable, they shift during winding if the wind is rushed, and a machine used without them is a burn waiting for a client to sit still for it. When a digital perm goes wrong on the scalp rather than the hair, this is almost always why.
Why the heat comes in cycles
The instinctive picture of this service is an oven: hair goes on, heat goes on, hair comes out curled. That is not how any of these machines are run, and the difference is the reason the category exists at all.
The heat is applied in intervals with cooling intervals between them. There are two reasons and they pull in the same direction. The first is moisture: hair carries water inside the cortex, heat turns it to steam, and steam that is generated faster than it can leave forces cavities through the shaft — the failure known as bubble hair, described in full on the digital perm. Pausing lets moisture leave gradually instead of all at once. The second is that setting happens on the way down, not the way up. The shape is taken up as the fibre cools on the former, which is why the last stage of any digital perm is a full cool-down before a single rod is unwound.
What per-rod control is actually for
Not novelty. A stylist working on a client with a tinted crown and virgin ends, or a heavy nape and a fine fringe, is dealing with two or three different fibres on one head. The alternative to per-rod control is setting the machine for the most fragile section and under-processing everything else, or setting it for the most resistant section and over-processing the rest. Neither is a good perm.
Older thermal machines had none of this. Nessler’s brass heaters and the machine-perm era that followed ran hot, ran continuously and hung their weight from an overhead frame, which is a large part of why Europe abandoned electrical perming the moment the cold wave arrived — the story is at the machine perm era. What came back in the late 1990s was not the old machine. It was the old idea with control added to it.
Why this page publishes no temperature
You can find figures for this in about ten seconds, and you will find several that disagree. This library prints none of them, and since a machines page is exactly where a reader expects a number, here is the reasoning in plain terms.
One
The setting belongs to four things at once
The machine, the lotion it is matched to, the hair in front of the operator, and the cycle being run. Change any one and the right setting changes. A figure quoted without the other three is not a specification, it is a fragment.
Two
It depends on the country and on the hair type
What is published in Japan, in Korea, in mainland China and in Taiwan are different ranges, attached to different machines and different lotion systems. The hair decides as much as the country does: coarse resistant hair and fine hair are not run at the same setting on the same machine. Printing one as the figure would be picking a market, ignoring the head in the chair, and calling the result a fact.
Three
A number on a website is used at home
This settles it. Some proportion of anyone who reads a figure here will reproduce it with a curling iron on dry hair, without the cream reducer, the cooling intervals, the felt pad or a second pair of hands. The number would be the least useful thing on this page and the most likely to hurt someone.
What can be said honestly is that these rods are warm rather than iron-hot, that the heat is cycled rather than continuous, and that a competent operator sets the machine to the hair in the chair and adjusts it during the service. If you want to know what is being run on your head, ask — the answer should name the machine, the lotion it is matched to, and the reason for the cycle chosen.
The four firms that build them
This is a very small industry. Salon equipment is largely a Japanese and Korean speciality — Europe stopped building perm machines when the cold wave killed the trade in the 1950s and never restarted — and four manufacturers account for most of what you will meet in a professional salon.

Paimore, and where the name came from
Paimore is a professional manufacturer in Sakai, in Osaka Prefecture, making perm lotions, colour and care as well as hardware. It holds the trademark on 形状記憶デジタルパーマ — shape-memory digital perm — and it put the first widely used machine of this kind on the market around the turn of the century. That makes it the commercial originator of the digital perm and the source of the phrase, which is not the same as inventing heat perming. Heat perming is European and Edwardian and predates the company by the better part of a century, as Nessler and the first perm sets out.
It is also one of very few firms anywhere selling the machine, the rods and the lotion designed for one another, which is worth knowing when a salon tells you it runs a system rather than a machine. Oohiro, by contrast, is an equipment house first — it has been building salon and barber hardware since the 1950s — and its ODIS processors are sold as equipment, to be paired with whatever chemistry the salon prefers. One claim to discount
Womax’s Japanese distributor describes the company as the world’s number one maker of digital perm machines by market share. That is a distributor’s marketing line, not an independently verified figure, and it is repeated on a good many salon websites as though it were a fact. Womax is a real and substantial Korean manufacturer with a genuine range. The ranking is not a fact this library will pass on.
Three names that are not machine makers
Search this subject for ten minutes and you will collect a list of famous Japanese houses credited with digital perm systems. Most of that list is wrong, and the errors are consistent enough to be worth correcting individually. A house that makes the chemistry for a heat perm is not a house that makes the machine.
Chemistry, not hardware
Shiseido Professional, Milbon, LebeL
None of the three markets a digital perm machine. What they make is lotion — including lotions formulated to be worked with heat, which is exactly how the confusion starts. Shiseido Professional separately sells SYSTEM QURL and CRYSTALLIZING QURL, run on its DS-300Q processor. That is a heated-rod system and can fairly be described as one; it is simply not sold under the digital perm name.
A different machine
Takara Belmont
A large Osaka equipment group, and not a perm-machine maker in this sense. Its air wave vita is an air perm machine: a hooded unit drawing temperature- and humidity-controlled air through perforated rods, which is a genuinely different category from a heated rod on a cable. Naming it as a digital perm machine misdescribes both.
A registered phrase
“Digital perm” itself
In Japan the term is a registered trademark, which is why rival houses market thermal perms, hot perms and air waves instead. In everyday English it has gone generic and means any heated-rod machine perm. Both things are true at once, and it explains a good deal of the odd naming on salon price lists.
The reason for being this pedantic is that a client comparing salons is often comparing brand names rather than equipment, and the brand names in circulation are frequently attached to the wrong object. The question that actually distinguishes one salon from another is not whose logo is on the box. It is whether the operator can tell you which machine, which lotion, and why.
What the machine means for the person sitting under it
Hardware is only interesting to a client in terms of what it does to the appointment, so here is that part plainly.
You will be tethered. Every rod has its own cable, so for the heat phase and the cool-down that follows it — call it forty minutes to an hour of a three to four hour appointment — you cannot get up, and turning your head is limited. The rods have real weight and the head feels heavy. Nobody enjoys that stretch, and it is better known about in advance.
You should feel warmth and never heat. If a rod feels hot against your scalp, say so at once rather than waiting to see whether it settles. Insulation pads are the whole defence and they move; telling the operator is not a complaint, it is information they need.
What the machine cannot change
On bleached hair the answer is usually no, and usually is doing real work in that sentence. Highlights count, foils count, grown-out bleach still on the lengths counts. Bleaching oxidises cystine to cysteic acid; the neutraliser needs two sulphur atoms to close a bond and there is nothing left to rebuild with, so most bleached or highlighted hair takes a curl that drops out within weeks while the hair pays for it. That is the default and the default is no. A machine with per-rod control is a better instrument, not a different chemistry, and it is not what moves the answer. What can move it is a judgement made on the hair in front of me — how much lightener, how long ago, how much has grown out, what condition the rest is in — and occasionally, in the right hands and at the right strength, it is possible. And there is no home version. Not because the equipment is exotic, but because the machine, the purpose-built rods and a lotion formulated to be weak precisely because heat will finish the job are one system, and the domestic substitute for it — a shop-bought perm kit and a curling iron — is a full-strength reduction followed by an unplanned thermal load on the same hair. That combination is the shortest route to the failure this whole category is engineered to avoid.

Does Shiseido or Takara Belmont make one?
No, though both are often credited with it. Shiseido Professional, Milbon and LebeL make lotions, some of them formulated to be worked with heat; Shiseido separately sells SYSTEM QURL and CRYSTALLIZING QURL on its DS-300Q processor, which is a heated-rod system under a different name. Machines are sold through professional equipment channels and are not cheap, but the real obstacle is not the purchase. The rods, the lotion and the processor are designed as one system, and the lotion is deliberately weak because the heat is expected to do part of the work. Without all three, and without someone placing an insulation pad under every rod, you do not have a digital perm.
