The Japanese Perm

Two Japanese ideas changed modern perming: the heated rod on a controlled unit, and a trade classification of perm lotions that decides, before anybody switches a machine on, which bottles may be warmed and which may not.

Most of what a British salon calls a hot perm was worked out in Japan. The part that did not travel with it is the filing system behind it, which is a pity, because that is the useful half.

A hair type that made a room-temperature wave look weak

The cold wave conquered the West because it worked on the hair the West had. On East Asian hair it often did not. Hair across the region is typically coarser, denser and rounder in cross-section than European hair, with a tighter and better-organised cuticle, and a round fibre resists being held in a bend the way an oval one does not. Put that hair on a large rod at room temperature and the classic complaint follows: the wave looks acceptable on the day and is gone in a month, or it never arrives at all and the surface merely frizzes.

You can attack that with a stronger lotion, and the trade did, at a cost the hair paid. Or you can add a second variable. Heat, applied to hair that has already been chemically softened and is under tension on a former, does work that no increase in alkalinity does: it drives water out of the fibre while the new shape is being decided, and the shape that sets is held with a persistence a cold wave on the same head cannot match.

Heat is not a stronger version of chemistry. It is a different lever, and it gets a result on hair where the chemical lever alone has already given up.

Japan pulled that lever in two quite different directions, thirty years apart.

The 1970s: a precision job on very short hair

パンチパーマ (panchi pāma), the punch perm, came out of Japanese barbering in the 1970s and peaked through the 1980s. It is a thermal service, but it shares almost nothing else with what came later.

The work is done on short men’s hair with a small heated iron, section by section, locking each piece into a tight, geometric, densely uniform curve. Nothing about it is soft. It is closer to precision engineering on a haircut than to a texture service — the value is in absolute regularity across a head, and a stylist who could deliver that was a specialist rather than a generalist. It carried strong subcultural associations in Japan, which is part of why it faded, and it survives now as a niche retro service done by a small number of people who never stopped doing it.

I mention it because it establishes the principle that the digital perm later industrialised: that heat applied to reduced hair under tension produces a shape with a memory, and that the Japanese trade was comfortable with heated tools half a century ago while Europe had abandoned them.

The late 1990s: the heated rod on a controlled unit

The digital perm was commercialised in Japan in the late 1990s. Paimore, a professional manufacturer in Sakai in Osaka Prefecture, is the trademark holder and commercial originator, registering 「形状記憶デジタルパーマ」 — shape-memory digital perm. That is not the same as inventing heat perming, which is far older and European, but it is what turned a principle into a system a salon could buy.

The shape of the service is five stages, and only the middle one is new:

  1. Softening. A reducing lotion breaks disulphide bonds. Deliberately calibrated milder than a cold wave, because heat is going to do part of the work.
  2. Intermediate rinse. The lotion comes out thoroughly, and heat protection and moisture shields go on.
  3. Thermal restructuring. The hair is wound onto rods containing internal heating elements, connected to a control unit that governs each rod.
  4. Heat-activated memory. Warmth drives residual moisture out while the fibre is held in the curve of the rod.
  5. Fixation. An oxidising neutraliser — sodium bromate, or hydrogen peroxide.

The result behaves the opposite way round to a cold wave. A cold wave is tightest wet. A digital perm is loosest wet and comes alive as it dries, which is the single most common source of the panic email three days after the appointment. Why there is no temperature on this page

The rods are warm. They are not iron-hot, and they are not one number. What a rod is set to depends on the country’s practice and on the hair type before anything else — the ranges published in Japan, Korea, mainland China and Taiwan are not the same ranges, and coarse resistant hair and fine hair are not run at the same setting on the same machine — and then on the machine, the lotion it was designed to run with, the condition of the hair and the stage of the cycle. Every published figure I have seen contradicts another published figure, and the practical harm is specific: a number on a website gets reproduced at home with a curling iron by somebody who has read only the number. Burning is never the treatment working. So this library does not print one, on any page, in any region.

The classification that decides whether a bottle may be heated

Here is the part that has not travelled, and it is the most useful thing on this page. The Japanese professional trade does not classify perm lotions the way a British wholesaler does, by brand and by a strength number. It classifies them on two axes at once: which reducing agent, and whether the product is a cold one or a heated one. Distributor catalogues are organised by those categories, and a stylist ordering stock reads them before anything else.

The word to learn is 加温 (kaon), heated. That is the digital-perm-compatible class. A lotion filed under 加温 has been formulated on the assumption that it will be warmed on a rod: its strength, its buffering and its timings are all built around that. A lotion filed under コールド has not.

Heating a cold-only lotion is not a shortcut. It is a category error, and the manufacturers say so on the bottle.

This is not a subtlety. There are current Japanese cold perm products whose own instructions state explicitly that they cannot be warmed with a roller ball because they are cold-type agents and must be used at room temperature. A stylist who reaches for a familiar cold lotion and puts it on a heated rod because the client asked for a digital perm has changed the reaction, not accelerated it — the timing curve the manufacturer tested no longer describes what is happening in the fibre, and the check that would have caught it is gone too. The Japanese trade avoids that by making the distinction a shelf category rather than a footnote.

It also explains a piece of Japanese labelling discipline worth importing wholesale: thio and cysteine second agents are labelled by family and kept visibly apart, on the shelf as well as in the manual. The correction most Western write-ups need

Search in English for Japanese digital perm brands and you will be handed three household names. The record does not support them, and this is a documented negative rather than a gap in the research.

Shiseido Professional, Milbon and LebeL do not market digital perm systems. All three make heated — 加温 — perm lotions, which is a real and substantial thing to make, and which is what the English-language write-ups have half-seen. None of them sells a product called a digital perm. Milbon supplies lotions only. LebeL sits under Takara Belmont, whose air wave machine is an air perm unit, not a heated-rod digital perm.

Shiseido Professional is the one genuine exception, and not in the way people assume. It does sell hardware: SYSTEM QURL, with the CRYSTALLIZING QURL lotions, built around the DS-300Q processor. Its own educational material describes it as a heated-rod system — 加温ロッドシステム — rather than as a digital perm. So the accurate sentence is that Shiseido Professional markets a heated-rod perm system under its own name, not that it markets a digital perm.

The companies, the machine makers who really do build these units, and the reason Japan builds salon hardware at all when Europe stopped, are all on the Japanese perm houses.

Three to four hours, and what the time is spent on

Diagnosis first, and on this service it is not a formality: porosity, elasticity and a full chemical history, then a strand test. The hair is clarified to strip mineral load and styling polymer, and porosity equalisers go on the ends and any zone that reads thirsty.

Then the softening lotion, section by section on clean damp hair, with frequent checks — the Japanese habit is a knot test, tying a strand loosely and watching how it behaves, rather than relying on a clock. Rinse for five to ten minutes with warm water. Heat protection on. The wind is croquignole or spiral depending on the length and the intended shape, with insulation pads between scalp and rod, and the wind is where the service is actually authored: see rod size versus shape. Thermal cycling in stages. Then — and stylists rush this — the rods must cool completely before they come off, because a shape released while still warm has not finished deciding what it is. Neutralise, rinse, condition.

Longevity is four to eight months, and it grows out without a hard line of demarcation, which is one of its real advantages over a tight cold wave. It costs three to four hours in a chair.

What goes wrong: over-processing, showing as frizz rather than curl, from a lotion left too long or a setting that did not match the porosity in front of it; thermal marking of the scalp where the insulation pads were badly placed; and fishhooked ends from poor tension or a badly placed end paper during the wind.

Who it suits, and the two refusals

Best on coarse, thick, straight, resistant virgin hair with high tensile strength — East Asian, but equally Latin American and Mediterranean textures that behave the same way. It works with care on medium-density hair with little colour history, subject to a strand test that is actually read.

Single-process tinted hair can be waved, with the lotion strength dropped for the raised porosity and the test taken first. Fine, fragile hair that cannot take reduction and heat together is a no on ordinary grounds.

The two absolutes

Usually no — and usually is doing real work in that sentence. Bleaching oxidises cystine into cysteic acid, and a neutraliser needs two sulphur atoms it can no longer find, so most bleached or highlighted hair takes a curl that drops out within weeks while the hair pays for it. Adding heat to that is the worst combination available: the fibre softens early, will not hold the rod, and parts under low load. That is the default and the default is no, and on a heated rod it moves less than anywhere else. Highlights count. Foils count. Grown-out bleach on the lengths counts. It is a judgement made on the hair in front of me — how much lightener, how long ago, how much has grown out, what condition the rest is in — and occasionally, in the right hands and at the right strength, it is possible. Hydroxide-relaxed hair is never permed, in either direction. Hydroxide works by lanthionisation — one sulphur atom is permanently removed — and a perm lotion has nothing to open. See perm versus relaxer.

Pregnancy: absorption through the scalp is minimal, but hormonal change alters porosity and elasticity enough that curl retention becomes genuinely unpredictable, and the sitting is a long one. Most salons advise postponing and so would I. There are no home versions of this service and there is no sensible way to make one.

Questions

What is the difference between a digital perm and a cold wave?

Chemistry plus heat, rather than chemistry alone — and a curl that behaves in the opposite direction. A cold wave is at its tightest when the hair is wet and softens as it dries. A digital perm is loose and nearly straight when wet and reaches full shape as the water leaves, because the shape was set thermally into the cortex. Neither is better; they answer different briefs.

Why does this library never give a rod temperature?

Because there is no single figure to give. It depends on the country’s practice and on the hair type — the ranges published in Japan, Korea, mainland China and Taiwan are not the same ranges, and coarse resistant hair and fine hair are not run at the same setting — as well as on the machine, the lotion made for it and the stage of the cycle, and published figures from different manufacturers contradict each other. There is also a practical reason: a number published on a website gets reproduced at home with a curling iron, which is how people damage their hair while believing they are following professional guidance.

What does 加温 mean on a Japanese perm product?

It reads kaon and it means heated. It marks the class of lotion formulated to be warmed on a rod — the digital-perm-compatible class. Its opposite is コールド, cold. The distinction is a shelf category in Japan, not a footnote, and a cold-only lotion is not made suitable for a heated rod by wanting it to be.

Is a punch perm just a very tight digital perm?

No. They share a thermal principle and nothing else. A punch perm is done with a small heated iron on short men’s hair, section by section, producing a tight and extremely uniform geometric curl; it is a precision job on a haircut. A digital perm is a shape service on mid-lengths and ends using rods on a controlled unit. Different tools, different clients, different decades.

Do Shiseido, Milbon and LebeL make digital perms?

Not as such, and this is the correction most English-language articles need. All three make heated perm lotions, which is what the confusion is built on. None markets a product called a digital perm. Shiseido Professional does sell a heated-rod system in its own right — SYSTEM QURL, with CRYSTALLIZING QURL lotions on the DS-300Q processor — and describes it in exactly those words rather than as a digital perm.

My digital perm looks flat when I wash it. Has it dropped out?

Almost certainly not, and this is the commonest misunderstanding after the service. Wet, a thermally set curl looks loose and nearly straight. Dry it with a diffuser, or twist sections round your fingers as you blow-dry, and it comes back. If you towel it roughly and leave it to dry flat, it will look like a failed perm and it is not one.
