The Cysteine Perm
The cautious first attempt: an amino acid your hair is already built from, used as a mild reducing agent at close to neutral pH, giving a soft airy wave that lasts eight to twelve weeks and then goes entirely.
This is the perm people book when they are not sure they want a perm, and booked knowingly it is a good idea. Booked in the hope that it will behave like a perm, it is a disappointment with a receipt — so the number that matters is the one at the end of this paragraph, not the one at the end of the appointment.

L-cysteine, and a lotion that barely swells the hair
The active is L-cysteine hydrochloride, or a proprietary blend of short-chain amino acids, in a mild reducing lotion at roughly pH 7.0 to 8.0. It works at room temperature, it penetrates with very little cuticle swelling, and it smells of almost nothing, because there is no ammonia in it to smell of.
Cysteine is the amino acid your hair is largely built from, and that is not a marketing coincidence — it is the mechanism. Free cysteine in the lotion acts as a reducing thiol and exchanges with the hair’s own disulphide bonds, breaking them. It is doing exactly what a thioglycolate does, more politely and to fewer bonds.
Fewer bonds opened means less asked of the fibre, and less shape held afterwards. Those are the same sentence, and every claim made for this chemistry has to live inside it.
What it is not is feeding. A standard oxidising neutraliser — peroxide or sodium bromate — still has to go on at the end, exactly as with any other perm, or the bonds that were opened stay open. See neutralising a perm for what that step is doing.
Level of change
The teCsture Scale runs from 1, the tightest pattern, to 10, poker straight — one ladder, ten rungs. What a treatment does is move you a number of rungs. That distance is the job, and it is what the work should be priced on: the level of change, not the bottle.

Cystine
Two cysteines already joined by a disulphide bond — the oxidised dimer. Cystine cannot reduce anything. It is the bond a perm acts on: the substrate, the thing being opened.
Cysteine and cysteamine do the reducing. Cystine is what they act on. Any page that says a perm works by adding cystine has confused the substrate with the reagent.
The cysteamine comparison is worth holding on to, because it is the clearest illustration in the whole library of how little it takes to change what a chemistry can do. Take one carboxyl group off cysteine and you have cysteamine; a smaller molecule, a stronger reducing agent, more bonds opened, and a wave that holds for months instead of weeks. Same family, one missing group, a difference you can measure on a calendar. If a salon uses the two words interchangeably, they are not reading the ingredient deck.
It sounds like pedantry until you notice how much rests on it. The reason bleached hair is usually a no is a statement about cystine: bleaching oxidises cystine to cysteic acid, and a neutraliser needs two sulphur atoms it can no longer find. With the three words the wrong way round, that sentence — the most important sentence in this library — is unreadable.
What the word “protein” is doing on the box
These lotions are sold as bond-friendly, natural, and sometimes as protein perms, with the suggestion that the amino acids replenish the hair while they curl it. The chemistry is genuinely mild. The framing around it is a claim about the label rather than about the fibre.
“Protein perm” is a marketing construct
Free amino acids sitting in a lotion cannot knit themselves into the hair’s permanent internal protein chains. Hair is not fed from the outside, and it is certainly not fed during a reduction. This is a structural chemical service that opens bonds in your hair and requires an oxidiser to close them, not a conditioning treatment that happens to add movement.
“Natural” here describes where the ingredient came from, not what the process does. Cysteine is naturally occurring. So is the disulphide bond it takes apart.
The dating is worth correcting too. The clean-beauty branding around amino-acid perms belongs to the last decade or so. The chemistry itself is considerably older and has been used in Japanese and Brazilian texture work for a long time, which is a more interesting provenance than the one on the packaging.
And the same habit applies here as everywhere in this family: a range name tells you nothing, because a professional house will sell several different reducing systems under one badge. Read the active ingredient, never the range name.
Who it suits, and the number to be told before rather than after
It suits very fine or fragile hair that still passes an elasticity test, healthy virgin hair wanting a whisper of movement, and the client who wants to try texture without committing to it. For a first perm on someone genuinely unsure, a wave that is gone in ten weeks is an honest way to find out whether you like yourself with movement.
It does nothing at all on coarse, resistant hair. Not a weak result — no result. There is not enough reducing power to register a structural change in a dense, flat-cuticled fibre, and the appointment becomes money spent on a wash and blow-dry. That hair needs an alkaline perm, and being told so is a favour.
The vanish effect
The characteristic complaint is not that the wave was bad. It is that a client with slightly resistant hair finds nothing left after a month and feels they paid for a blow-dry. The fix is not chemical. Eight to twelve weeks is a number a client should hear before the appointment rather than after it, and a salon that does not say it out loud is setting up its own bad review.
Gentle is not the same as suitable
This is the trap, and it catches kind-hearted stylists as often as clients. Faced with hair that has been through a lot, the instinct is to reach for the mildest lotion on the shelf. But damaged hair has the least structural memory of any hair, so it is the least able to hold a shape — and mild chemistry gives it the least to hold with. Where the answer is no
On bleached hair, usually no — and usually is doing real work in that sentence. Highlights count, foils count, and grown-out bleach still sitting on the lengths counts. Bleaching oxidises cystine to cysteic acid, and the neutraliser needs two sulphur atoms to close a bond — there is nothing left there to rebuild, so most bleached or highlighted hair takes a curl that drops out within weeks while the hair pays for it. That is the default and the default is no, and reaching for the mildest chemistry in the room is not what softens it. But it is a judgement made on the hair in front of me — how much lightener, how long ago, how much has grown out, what condition the rest is in — and occasionally, in the right hands and at the right strength, it is possible. Never over a hydroxide relaxer either, in either direction and at any interval.
What to expect, and how to keep a short wave alive
The service runs the familiar shape: elasticity test, gentle cleanse, thirty to forty-five minutes of winding on large rods, lotion, fifteen to twenty-five minutes at room temperature watched on test curls, rinse, blot, neutralise. It is a quiet appointment. Nothing stings and nothing smells, which is much of the appeal.
The first seventy-two hours
Seventy-two hours — and it matters more here than anywhere, because there is so little holding the shape in the first place. Neutralising reforms the bonds but it does not finish the job on the spot: oxidation carries on in air and the fibre keeps hardening for about three days. In that window what you press into the hair tends to stay: no tight ties, no clips, no hard brushing, and go gently with heat. A hair tie on the first evening can take a week off a wave that only had ten.
Weight is the enemy
Lightweight volumising mousse, a diffuser rather than a brush, no oils and no heavy creams. A cream that would flatter a firm curl will pull this one straight in a single application. London’s hard water is punishing for the same reason — calcium loads into the hair and there is no structural surplus to carry the extra weight — so chelate every three or four weeks.
Beyond that, follow the washing instruction for the product actually used on you rather than a rule somebody learned thirty years ago. Manufacturers differ, and they know their own chemistry.
The harshness ladder, which is the spine of the chemistry family
Every perm chemistry sits in one order, and once you can see the order the rest of the family makes sense. From gentlest to harshest: sulfite, then cysteamine and the thio-free waves, then true acid, then acid-balanced, then the alkaline cold wave.

The order is not simply the order of pH. A true acid perm runs at a lower pH than a cysteine perm and is harsher than one, because what decides the strength of a perm is the reducing agent and how much of it reaches the cortex, not the alkali carrying it in. pH is the door; the reducing agent is what walks through it. Gentler always means less durable, and there is no free end to this ladder. Every increment of kindness is paid for in weeks of wear.
That is the sentence the whole chemistry family rests on, and it is the one thing no manufacturer has ever found a way around. Every few years something is launched that claims to have done it. What has actually happened, every time, is a move of one step down the ladder with better marketing attached.
Questions
What is the difference between cysteine and cysteamine?
One group of atoms, and several months of wear. Is cystine a third option?
No. Cystine is not a reducing agent and cannot be one. It is two cysteines already bonded together — the oxidised dimer, and the bond that a perm opens. It is the substrate, never the reagent, and any source that says otherwise has it backwards.
Are amino-acid perms natural?
The active is a naturally occurring amino acid, and the service is still a structural chemical change that opens bonds in your hair and needs an oxidising neutraliser to finish. “Natural” describes the ingredient's origin, not the process. The disulphide bond it takes apart is naturally occurring too.
Why did my wave disappear after a month?
Because that is roughly what it does. Eight to twelve weeks is the design, and on slightly resistant hair the shorter end of that is common. Very few bonds were rearranged, so the hair reasserts its own shape quickly. If you want months, you need a step or two up the ladder.
Can a cysteine perm repair damaged hair while it curls it?
No. That claim comes from the word protein on the box and describes nothing that happens. Amino acids in a lotion do not join the hair's internal protein chains, and the service is a reduction whatever else it is called. For genuinely compromised hair the honest answer is usually no perm at all, and a period of repair first.
Will it work on thick, coarse hair?
Almost certainly not — and that is worth knowing before you pay for it. The reducing power is too low to register a structural change in a dense, flat-cuticled fibre, so the result is nothing rather than a little. Coarse resistant hair belongs on an alkaline lotion.
