The Thio-Free Cysteamine Perm

The chemistry behind most modern soft waves: cysteamine hydrochloride at close to neutral pH, worked at room temperature, giving an elastic wave that lasts months — and, the part clients actually book it for, barely smells at all.

Thio-free is the marketing name and cysteamine is the ingredient. It is the most interesting bottle on the trolley chemically, because the reason it works is a single missing group of atoms, and that one difference explains both what it gives you and what it cannot.

Cysteamine hydrochloride, and no ammonia at all

“Thio-free” means free of ammonium thioglycolate and its relatives. What replaces them is cysteamine hydrochloride, a small thiol molecule that can open disulphide bonds at close to neutral pH — which means no ammonia is needed to force the cuticle apart first, and the fibre never goes through the violent swelling an alkaline perm puts it through.

It processes at room temperature, in fifteen to twenty-five minutes, with no cap and no dryer, although some systems permit gentle warmth on resistant hair. Neutralising is conventional: hydrogen peroxide or sodium bromate, applied as with any other perm.

The odour, which is the real reason people choose it

Let us be honest about what sells this chemistry. It is not the bond count. The pungent smell of a traditional perm comes from the ammonia and the thioglycolate, and cysteamine has neither, so the service is close to unremarkable in a room and does not come back on the third wash. For a client sitting in an open salon for two hours, and for anybody who has to live with them that evening, that is a substantial thing and there is no reason to pretend otherwise.

Low odour is not the same as low impact. This is still a structural service that opens bonds in your hair, and it is still refused on the same hair everything else is refused on.

Level of change

The teCsture Scale runs from 1, the tightest pattern, to 10, poker straight — one ladder, ten rungs. What a treatment does is move you a number of rungs. That distance is the job, and it is what the work should be priced on: the level of change, not the bottle.

Less movement than a thio lotion, and that is the trade you are making for the comfort of it.

Cysteine minus one group of atoms

This is the fact worth carrying away from the page. Cysteamine is cysteine with the carboxyl group removed. Cysteine is the amino acid your hair is already largely built from; take the —COOH off it and you have cysteamine, and that small deletion is exactly why cysteamine is the stronger reducing agent of the two.

The consequence is not academic. A cysteine perm opens fewer bonds and gives a wave that is gone in eight to twelve weeks. A cysteamine perm opens more of them and gives a wave that holds for three to five months. Same family, one missing group, a difference measured in months — the milder of the two is at the cysteine perm.

And the one that trips everybody, including the trade

Cystine is not a reducing agent and cannot be. Cystine is the oxidised dimer — two cysteines already joined by a disulphide bond. It is the thing a perm acts on, not the thing that acts. Cysteine and cysteamine do the reducing; cystine is the bond being opened.

Three near-identical words for three different roles, and getting them the wrong way round is the single commonest error in salon literature. If a product page tells you its perm works by adding cystine, whoever wrote it has confused the substrate with the reagent.

Because cysteamine works without heavy alkali, the cuticle stays comparatively flat and more of the hair's own elasticity survives. The wave that results is soft, springy and touchable rather than defined and firm — it reads as good natural texture rather than as a set, which is the whole point of the modern lived-in wave.

The hair this suits, and the hair it will not move

It suits normal hair, fine hair, single-process tinted hair, and anyone who wants soft flexible movement rather than curl. It preserves artificial colour noticeably better than a cold wave, and it is the chemistry most often paired with soft tools and large rods for beach-wave work — see benders and flexi-rods.

It will not curl coarse resistant hair. Gentleness and strength are the same dial. Cysteamine opens fewer bonds than thioglycolate, which is exactly why the cuticle survives it and exactly why it cannot force a firm curl into thick, dense, unprocessed hair. On that head it under-processes and the wave is gone in a week, and the honest answer is an alkaline lotion or a digital hot perm.

Where the answer is no

On bleached hair the answer is usually no — and usually is doing real work in that sentence. Highlights count, foils count, and grown-out bleach still on the lengths counts. Bleaching oxidises cystine to cysteic acid; the neutraliser needs two sulphur atoms to close a bond and there is nothing left there to rebuild, so most bleached or highlighted hair takes a curl that drops out within weeks while the hair pays for it. That is the default and the default is no. Mild chemistry is not what makes the difference. But it is a judgement made on the hair in front of me — how much lightener, how long ago, how much has grown out, what condition the rest is in — and occasionally, in the right hands and at the right strength, it is possible. Never over a hydroxide relaxer either, in either direction, at any interval.

What the service involves — and the mistake to watch for

  1. Elasticity test and full chemical history. As with every perm, and for the same reason — see can your hair take a perm.
  2. Clarifying wash. Some systems specify their own preparation shampoo, and where they do it is not upselling: the lotion is formulated against that starting condition.
  3. The wind, thirty to forty-five minutes, on rods or soft tools depending on the shape being built.
  4. Lotion on. Notably little smell. This is the moment clients tend to comment on.
  5. Fifteen to twenty-five minutes at room temperature, watched on a test curl at whatever interval the manufacturer specifies for that product — and current systems genuinely disagree, from two minutes to ten, with at least one saying no test curl is required at all.
  6. Rinse, blot, neutralise. Peroxide or bromate, applied properly to every rod. See neutralising a perm.

Rinsing too early is this chemistry's characteristic failure

Because there is no violent swelling and no strong smell, a cysteamine perm does not feel like it is doing much, and a technician working to the rhythm of a thioglycolate lotion will call it done too soon. The rods come off looking acceptable and the wave empties out within a fortnight. The client concludes their hair does not take a perm. In fact it was never given the time.

Some cysteamine systems have long working windows for exactly this reason — one professional lotion permits processing up to ninety minutes, checked every five — which is not an invitation to leave the room but an admission that this chemistry needs patience that thioglycolate never asked for.

Which products are actually cysteamine

More confusion attaches to this category than to any other, because “thio-free” is a claim on a box and cysteamine is a line on an ingredient list, and the two are not always in the same place.

Read the active ingredient, never the range name. A house sells three or four different reducing systems under one badge, separated by a code you cannot interpret from outside.

Trade writing routinely files whole ranges as cysteamine that the manufacturer's own paperwork classifies as thioglycolate, and occasionally the reverse. The only reliable method is the ingredient declaration, and two systems can be stated with confidence because their makers publish it:

The brand's own professional information sheet gives the first step as cysteamine HCl at pH 7.3, with an acidified hydrogen peroxide neutraliser at pH 2.5 to 3.0. Note also that its pea protein is a conditioning additive rather than the reducing system, whatever “protein perm” suggests. More at Curl Cult.

That pH 7.3 figure is a useful anchor for the whole category: essentially neutral, a couple of full points below an acid-balanced perm and two and a half below a cold wave. It is also a reminder that a low pH does not mean a weak perm. What decides the strength here is the reducing agent, not the alkali carrying it.

What you get, and how long you keep it

A soft, elastic, touchable wave. The hair feels softer and looks shinier after this than after an alkaline perm, because the cuticle was never forced fully open, and it moves rather than sits.

Three to five months, relaxing gracefully. There is no hard line of demarcation as it grows, which is why it suits people who are not sure they want to commit to a texture — the exit from a cysteamine perm is undramatic in a way the exit from a cold wave is not.

The first seventy-two hours

Seventy-two hours. Neutralising reforms the bonds but it does not finish the job on the spot: oxidation carries on in air after you leave and the fibre keeps hardening for about three days. In that window what you press into the hair tends to stay, so a band pressed in on the first evening can set as a dent — no tight ties, no clips, no hard brushing, and go gently with heat. For washing, follow the instruction for the product actually used on you.

Keeping it

Weight is the enemy of a soft wave. Sulphate-free shampoo, lightweight milks, a curl cream or salt spray scrunched in rather than combed through, and nothing heavy or oil-based. A chelating shampoo every four weeks against London's hard water, which flattens an elastic wave faster than it flattens a firm curl. Questions

What does “thio-free” actually mean?

Free of ammonium thioglycolate and related thioglycolate reducing agents. In practice the replacement is cysteamine hydrochloride, so “thio-free perm” and “cysteamine perm” usually name the same bottle. Check the ingredient list rather than the claim on the front.

Does it really not smell?

It genuinely smells very little. The sharp smell of a conventional perm comes from ammonia and thioglycolate, and this chemistry has neither. Most clients notice the absence more than they expected to, and it is the honest reason a great many of them choose it.

Is it damage-free?

No perm is. This one swells the cuticle far less and leaves more of your hair's native elasticity intact than a cold wave does, which is a real advantage and not a claim of harmlessness. It still opens bonds, and on bleached hair the answer is still usually no.

How long does it last?

Three to five months, softening gradually. If yours vanished within a fortnight it was almost certainly rinsed too early — the commonest fault with this chemistry — or wound on a rod too large for your length.

What is the difference between cysteine and cysteamine?

One group of atoms and several months of wear. Cysteamine is cysteine with the carboxyl group removed, which makes it the stronger reducing agent: a cysteamine wave lasts three to five months where a cysteine wave lasts eight to twelve weeks. Cystine, confusingly, is neither — it is the bond they act on.

Can it curl thick straight hair?

Usually not tightly. It lacks the force to open enough bonds in coarse resistant hair, and what you get is a soft bend that drops quickly. For that hair the answer is an alkaline perm or a digital hot perm, and a stylist who tells you so is doing you a favour.
