Curl Cult

A modern three-step texture system that is widely described as keeping its chemistry secret, and does not — the reducing agent is printed on the manufacturer’s own professional information sheet, and it is worth reading properly.

I have no commercial interest in this brand and I do not stock it. What follows is what the three products are, taken from the ingredient declarations the manufacturer publishes, and what that means for the hair it is put on.

A three-step system, sold at the clean-beauty end of the market

Curl Cult is a professional texture brand founded by the stylist Janine Jarman. It is built for the clean-beauty end of the trade: low odour, plant-forward marketing, vegan and cruelty-free claims, and a service designed to sit inside a modern salon column rather than the all-day appointment a perm used to be.

Commercially it belongs to a category worth naming, because there are more of them every year. It is a stylist-founded micro-brand competing with legacy manufacturers on education and community rather than on distribution. That is a genuinely different business from the European majors, and it produces a different kind of technical material: less of it, more accessible, and — in this case — more forthcoming than the reputation suggests.

Which is the reason this page exists. Curl Cult is repeatedly written up, including in places that ought to know better, as a system whose reducing agent is a trade secret. It is not. The brand’s own professional product information sheet carries full ingredient declarations for all three steps, and they answer the question in the first two lines.

The chemistry is not undisclosed. It is disclosed, in the ordinary place, and almost nobody has looked.

Prepare, Liberate, Regenerate

  1. Prepare. A clarifying shampoo at pH 6.5. It takes off mineral load and styling polymer so that what follows meets hair rather than residue. This is not a branded innovation and the brand does not claim it is — it is the same first move any competent cold wave makes, and skipping it is one of the reliable ways to get patchy processing.
  2. Liberate. The permanent styling lotion, at pH 7.3, and its declared reducing agent is cysteamine hydrochloride — the second item on the list, after water. It is buffered with sodium hydroxide. Being near-neutral it barely swells the cuticle, which is why the directions run long.
  3. Regenerate. The neutralising treatment, at pH 2.5 to 3.0, and it is acidified hydrogen peroxide — phosphoric and etidronic acids on the list, no bromate anywhere. That low pH does two jobs at once: it oxidises the free thiol groups back into cross-links, and it slams the swollen cuticle shut over them. See neutralising a perm.

The products are made in Italy. Everything above is read directly off the manufacturer’s professional information sheet, which is a public document.

So the honest one-line description is short: Curl Cult is a thio-free cysteamine perm at a near-neutral pH, fixed with an acidified peroxide neutraliser. No part of that is a criticism. It is a coherent, conventional and rather mild piece of chemistry, competently assembled, and it does what it says.

One curiosity on the label

The step-one list also declares cystine hydrochloride, some way down. Cystine, with a T, is the oxidised dimer — the finished cross-link, two sulphurs already joined. It cannot reduce anything; it is the thing reduction takes apart. Whatever it is doing in that bottle, it is not the engine, and the two words being one letter apart is one of the commonest sources of confusion in this whole subject. The engine is cysteamine, and cysteamine is cysteine minus its carboxyl group.

Ninety minutes, and why

The manufacturer’s directions are unusually specific, and they are the most useful thing on the sheet for anyone trying to understand what a near-neutral perm actually is.

Wash with Prepare. Wind onto rods. Apply Liberate and process up to ninety minutes, checking the hair every five minutes throughout, with heat permitted on resistant hair. Then Regenerate for ten minutes, remove the rods, reapply, and process two minutes more.

Ninety minutes sounds alarming next to an alkaline wave that is finished in a fraction of the time, and it is the wrong instinct. The number is a direct consequence of the pH. At 7.3 the cuticle is barely swollen, so the reducing agent diffuses in slowly and time does the work that alkalinity would otherwise do. Long is not the same as harsh: the swelling of the cuticle sets the speed, and a near-neutral lotion barely swells it.

What it does mean is two practical things a salon has to plan for. The appointment is genuinely long, and it has to be watched rather than timed and left — a check every five minutes for an hour and a half is a stylist who is not doing anything else. And the second application of neutraliser after the rods come off is not an optional flourish; it is there because the hair that was pressed against the rod and the band gets the least of the first pass.

I will not print a house figure for when a first test curl should be taken, on this or any other system. Four current professional ranges give four different answers, from none required at all to a first check at two minutes, and no universal number is defensible. Follow the instruction for the product in your hand.

What the brand name actually names

The commercial anchor of the range is a proprietary technology name, PisumProtex, and the “protein perm” positioning that hangs off it. It is a good case study in reading a branded ingredient name, because it can be checked against the label in about a minute.

The only pea-derived material declared anywhere in the range is hydrolysed pea protein — from Pisum sativum, which is where the name comes from. It appears in all three steps: the shampoo, the lotion and the neutraliser. Hydrolysed pea protein is a conditioning additive. It is a perfectly reasonable one, and on hair with a roughened cuticle it can fill, support and improve how the hair combs and feels.

Protein can support a fibre. It cannot form a disulphide bond. Whatever creates the curl is the reducing agent, not the pea.

So a “protein perm” is a perm with a conditioning protein in it, and the name describes an additive rather than a mechanism. That is not an attack on the product — the product is a competent cysteamine system and the protein is doing a real if modest job in it. It is an objection to letting a branded name stand in for a mechanism, because that is how a stylist ends up unable to answer the only two questions that matter at the trolley: what is reducing the bonds, and at what pH.

The general rule underneath this is worth repeating from the bond-protected perm: additives of every kind act on free thiol groups and on the surface of the fibre. None of them rebuilds a true disulphide connection that is already gone. Which is why no additive, protein or otherwise, is what moves the answer on hair that has been lightened.

The same chemistry as a ninety-year-old American house

Cysteamine is a small thiol reducer that works at a near-neutral pH. In the ladder of perm chemistries it sits at the mild end: gentler than an alkaline thioglycolate wave, stronger than sulphite, slower than both. The family, and what it will and will not do, is on the thio-free cysteamine perm.

Thio-free, throughout the trade, means free of ammonium thioglycolate. It does not mean free of sulphur chemistry, and it cannot, because the reducing agent is itself a thiol. A client who reads “thio-free” as “no chemistry” has been misled by trade shorthand rather than by the brand, but she has still been misled, and it is worth ten seconds of correction in the chair.

Which puts this system in exactly the same chemical family as Zotos Texture EFX — a range from an American house founded in 1929, now owned by a German group. Neither side advertises the overlap and it is worth knowing when a representative implies a formulation is unique. A century-old manufacturer and a stylist-founded micro-brand are selling the same reducing agent at the same end of the same ladder, at different prices, with different education attached. That is not a reason to prefer either. It is a reason to buy on the education, the documentation and the support, since the chemistry is not the differentiator anybody claims it is.

What a mild system does not change

Every system at this end of the market is sold partly on gentleness, and gentleness is exactly the claim that tempts a salon across a line it should not cross. So this section is the same on every brand page in this library, and it applies to brands not in it too.

Bleached hair: usually no — and usually is doing real work in that sentence.

The mechanism is worth stating rather than asserting. Bleaching oxidises cystine — the two-sulphur cross-link that holds hair together — into cysteic acid. A neutraliser rebuilds a perm by joining two sulphur atoms back together, and cysteic acid does not supply them, so most bleached or highlighted hair takes a curl that drops out within weeks while the hair pays for it. That is the default and the default is no. A near-neutral pH does not change it. A conditioning protein does not change it. What can occasionally change it is not a product at all: it is a judgement made on the hair in front of me — how much lightener, how long ago, how much has grown out, what condition the rest is in — and in the right hands, at the right strength, it is sometimes possible. Assume no, and come and let me look rather than deciding from a page.

Highlights fall under the bleach rule, not the tint rule

Single-process tinted hair is a different case and can usually be waved, with a strand test taken first and the strength chosen for the raised porosity. Highlighted hair, where the lightening was done with bleach, sits with the bleach answer rather than the tint one, however few the foils and however gentle the system claims to be. Grown-out bleach still sitting on the lengths counts as well. Reading a “suitable for colour-treated hair” line as permission for bleach is the commonest way a client is harmed by a modern system. Hydroxide-relaxed hair is never permed either, and that one genuinely is absolute. Hydroxide removes one sulphur atom permanently, and a reducing agent cannot open a bond that is no longer there. Thio and hydroxide chemistry never meet, in either direction. That is on perm versus relaxer.

What the brand got right, and what to ask it

Two things this brand and its neighbours genuinely achieved, and I say so as somebody who has been sceptical about the packaging all the way down this page.

They made the word sayable again

Salons that had refused to say “perm” for twenty years are offering texture services again, and low odour and a milder chemistry are most of the reason. Smell is one of the most cited reasons a client refuses outright, and it is not a trivial objection to have removed.

They raised the expectation

Clients now expect a chemical service to look after the fibre rather than treat damage as the price of curl. That expectation is general, it is reasonable, and it is a good thing regardless of whose bottle you buy.

Against that, the honest limits. A near-neutral cysteamine system is slower and weaker than an alkaline wave, and on coarse resistant hair it will do less than the client is hoping for. The long process is real. And the marketing does what marketing does: it foregrounds a pea and puts the actual working chemistry in the small print, where anyone who wants it can find it and almost nobody does.

So the questions to put to any new texture system, this one included, are the same four every time. What is the reducing agent, and where is it declared? At what pH? What are the actual timings, checked against the manufacturer’s own document rather than the training day? And will the company supply a full technical data sheet and safety data sheet even where the formula is proprietary — pH, patch testing, contraindications, what it must not be used over? What is the reducing agent in Curl Cult?

Is a protein perm gentler, and could it work on bleached hair?

It is a milder chemistry than an alkaline wave, and the protein is not what makes it so. On bleached or bleach-highlighted hair the answer is usually no whatever the system is called: bleaching converts cystine to cysteic acid and there is nothing left for a neutraliser to rejoin, so the curl drops out while the hair pays for it. Where the answer is anything else, it is because somebody has looked at the hair — how much lightener, how long ago, how much has grown out — and not because of an additive.

Is it the same as the Zotos thio-free perm?

The same chemical family, yes — both are cysteamine systems at the mild end of the ladder, and neither brand advertises the overlap. They are not identical products: concentrations, buffering, additives, timings and neutraliser type all differ, and so do the price and the education attached. But if you are choosing between them, the reducing agent is not the thing that separates them.

If a formula is proprietary, how do I know it is safe?

You rely on the same things you rely on with any professional chemical service, and you are entitled to ask about all of them. A reputable manufacturer supplies a full technical data sheet and safety data sheet to the salon even where the formula is trade secret, covering pH, patch testing, contraindications and what the product must not be used over. Your stylist should have read them. Undisclosed formulation is normal in cosmetics; undisclosed safety information is not, and a brand that will not supply the second is the one to question.
