The Modern Perm
The service came back after twenty-five years in exile, and it came back as a different thing: bigger rods, gentler chemistry, bond builders in the mix, and clients asking for a wave rather than a curl.
Almost everything about how this service is delivered has improved since the last time it was fashionable. One thing has not moved at all, and the honest version of this page is the one that says which is which. I would rather set out the limit early than let a good decade of chemistry do work it cannot do.

Twenty-five years in exile
For most of the 1990s and 2000s the word carried an almost toxic charge inside my own industry. To suggest a perm to a client was to conjure frizz, dry ends and irreversible damage, and salon menus quietly dropped the service in favour of blowout bars, smoothing treatments and rows of flat irons. That was not really a judgement on the chemistry. It was a judgement on one decade’s practice, made by a profession that had watched what happened and drawn the wrong lesson from it.
The strangest part of the exile is that the aesthetic never left. Beach waves were a dominant look through the whole of the 2010s, and the trade delivered them entirely with wands, salt sprays and overnight braids — that is, with temporary tools, applied daily, at a cumulative thermal cost nobody was counting. We spent fifteen years achieving a permanent-looking result by the most damaging available route because the honest route had a bad name.
A client who wands her hair three times a week is not avoiding a chemical service. She is choosing a different way to pay for it.
What clients ask for now, and why it changed everything
The single biggest difference between this era and the last one is the brief. Almost nobody walks in asking for curl. They ask for movement, for bend, for something that dries into a shape instead of into nothing, for hair that holds a wave without an iron. That sounds like a small change in language and it reorganises the entire service.
Bigger rods, first of all — large enough that in the 1980s they would have been considered a body-wave tool rather than a perm tool. A larger rod produces a wider, softer S-bend and it also asks less of the fibre, because a gentler curvature needs fewer disulphide bonds opened to hold it. That is a real reduction in chemical load and it comes free with the fashion. Rod size versus shape covers what the diameter actually does.
Then the wrap stops being uniform. Cookie-cutter patterns have gone in favour of zoning: varying rod sizes across the head, altering direction section by section, leaving the root area or the last inch of the ends unwound so the result reads as something that grew rather than something that was applied. The directional wrap is where that gets decided, and it is now the part of the appointment that takes the longest.
And the perm stopped being a service you can execute in isolation. Where the wave lives and how it falls is dictated by the cut, so the two are designed together or the result fights the shape. If you want to see what this looks like as a booking rather than a theory, it is the cold wave service.
The men’s side, which is most of the growth
A large share of the revival is male, and it is the second time in a century that has happened — the first being the 1980s. Barbershops and texture salons that had never taken a male perm booking now take them steadily.
What they are asking for is not what the 1980s produced. Instead of a uniform tight corkscrew, the modern men’s perm is precision cutting on the sides and back with loose, placed wave on top — movement and lift for straight, fine hair that previously sat flat. It is a partial service far more often than a whole-head one, and it is a good deal more technical than it looks, because the wave has to start and stop exactly where the cut says it should.
It also brings a client into a texture chair who has never had a chemical service of any kind, which changes the consultation completely. What has genuinely improved in the bottle
The engine of the revival is not cultural appetite. It is that a specialist now has a range to choose from where a 1980s stylist had one strong lotion and a timer.
One
Milder reducing agents
Cysteamine, sulphite and cysteine systems, and acid-balanced formulations, operate much closer to the hair’s own pH and swell the cuticle far less than a full alkaline wave. They produce a softer result, which is what people now want anyway. The sulfite perm and the cysteine perm cover what each actually does.

Bond builders in the service
Bond builders act on free thiol groups, and that is a real and useful job during and immediately after a chemical service. They do not rebuild true disulfide connections and no manufacturer has claimed a mechanism that would. The bond-protected perm is honest about both halves.

Better neutralising
The commonest way to ruin a perm has always been to under-neutralise it, and modern oxidisers are more even and more forgiving than they were. It remains the step where results are lost. Neutralising a perm is the whole subject.
What has not improved is the diagnosis, because that was never chemistry. Reading porosity and elasticity, choosing a strength, winding with even tension and taking a test curl are the same skills they were in 1950, and they are the reason two clients with identical lotion walk out with different hair.
The sentence this page exists to say
Gentler chemistry has genuinely widened the range of hair that can be permed. It has not changed what bleach does to a disulphide bond. Bleaching oxidises cystine to cysteic acid, the neutraliser needs two sulphur atoms it can no longer find — and no advance on this page touches that.
Every advance raises the ceiling. None of them lowers the floor. The renaissance is real, and on bleached or highlighted hair the answer is still usually no. Where it is not, that is a judgement made on the hair in front of someone — how much lightener, how long ago, how much has grown out — and not a product on this page. Assume no and come and let me look. Bleach damage and can your hair take a perm set out where that line falls.
The digital perm took about fifteen years to cross the world
The most interesting thing in modern texture is not a chemical. It is that a service can be entirely ordinary in one city and exotic in another for a decade and a half.
The digital perm — chemical reduction combined with heated rods, so that the hair is curliest when dry rather than when wet, which is the reverse of a cold wave — was developed in Japan in the late 1990s and commercialised there in the early 2000s. It solved a real problem: thick, coarse, structurally dense hair often refuses to hold a large sweeping wave from a room-temperature lotion, and a big rod on a cold wave falls flat within weeks. Within a few years it was standard across Tokyo and Seoul.
It reached London as a mainstream offering roughly fifteen years later, and it arrived first through salons serving East Asian clients rather than through the mainstream trade. There was no barrier of patent, cost or difficulty. It simply took that long for the technique to travel, which tells you something about how this industry actually transmits knowledge — slowly, through communities, and not through the trade press.
On the temperature question
I do not publish a rod temperature figure and neither should anyone else. The rods are warm, not iron-hot, and the correct setting depends on the machine, the lotion, the hair and the cycle together — there is no single number that is right across those four variables.
The practical reason is blunter than the technical one: a number on a website gets reproduced at home with a curling iron. The digital hot perm and the machines explain what the equipment is doing, and the hot wave service is what it looks like as a booking.
The regional pages are worth reading for anyone who thinks this trade is globally standardised. It is not. Korea, Japan and Europe run different services under overlapping names.
The commercial argument nobody makes
The strongest honest case for a modern perm is one I almost never hear made, and it is a heat argument rather than a beauty one.
A client who wants wave has two options. She can produce it every few days with a wand or a straightener for the next year, or she can have it built into the fibre once and then wash, diffuse and wear it. The first route is not free. It is a slow accumulation of thermal exposure spread across a hundred and fifty applications, and it is the reason a great deal of the damage I see in Mayfair arrived without any chemical service being involved at all.
Less heat over a year, not more. That is the case, and it is a real one for a client who is genuinely styling daily.
It is not a case for everybody. If you rarely heat-style, a perm is a chemical service you did not need, and I will tell you so. And it says nothing about whether your hair can take one, which is a separate question with a separate answer. But for the client who reaches for a wand every other morning, one considered service and a good home care routine is the lower-damage path, and that argument almost never gets made because it does not sound like selling.
What I will not tell you
That a modern perm is safe. It is a chemical restructuring of the hair fibre and it always will be, which is why it is usually refused on bleached hair, refused over hydroxide relaxers in either direction, and refused where an elasticity test fails. What has changed is not that the chemistry became harmless. It is that it became adjustable — a specialist now picks from a range of strengths, adds bond protection where it helps, and declines the service outright when the hair cannot take it. That is a better answer than “safe”, and it is the true one.

Why is the perm back?
Two things arrived together. Younger clients with no memory of the 1980s started asking for texture through social platforms, and the chemistry available to answer them had genuinely improved — milder reducing agents, bond builders used alongside the service, better neutralising. Neither on its own would have done it.
How is a modern perm different from an 1980s one?
The underlying science is unchanged: disulphide bonds are opened, held in a new position and closed again. What changed is everything around it. Larger rods, mixed sizes and custom placement instead of one uniform pattern; gentler formulations chosen to suit the hair rather than one strong lotion for everybody; bond protection during the service; and a brief that asks for movement rather than defined curl.
Is a modern perm safe?
It is a chemical restructuring of the hair fibre, and I will not describe that as safe. What I will say is that it is now adjustable. A specialist picks from a range of strengths, protects where protection helps, and refuses the service where the hair cannot take it — on bleached or highlighted hair usually, and that usually is a judgement made on the hair in front of him rather than a rule read off a page; over a hydroxide relaxer in either direction always; and wherever an elasticity test fails.
Can fine hair take one?
Often, and fine hair frequently gets the best of it, because volume is what fine hair lacks and a perm supplies volume before it supplies curl. Two cautions: fine hair processes much faster, so formulation and timing must be exact, and a very tight curl is not a safe ask on a fragile fibre. The honest version is a larger rod and a softer result, which usually suits the head better anyway.
How long does it last?
Typically three to six months. It does not wash out — it grows out, at roughly half an inch a month, so the pattern gradually moves down the head and gets cut off. Washing frequency and how tight the original pattern was both affect how long it reads as intentional.

Everyone I know who had a perm in the eighties says never again. Are they wrong?
They are right about what happened to them and wrong about what it means for you. Their hair was permed with strong alkaline chemistry, frequently over hair that had already been permed, then styled daily with drying aerosols — a combination no competent salon would repeat. The eighties were not the perm at its natural state, they were the perm at its most reckless. What has changed is not that the chemistry became harmless but that it became adjustable, and that the refusal rate is now treated as the skill.
