The Bond-Protected Perm

A perm with a bond builder mixed into it: a real improvement to how the hair comes out, built on a mechanism that is almost universally described wrongly, and sold on a promise it has never been able to keep.

This is not a chemistry of its own. It is an additive that goes into somebody else's chemistry, which is why the honest version of this page spends most of its length on what changes and what does not.

An additive, not a perm

A bond-protected perm is an ordinary perm — alkaline, acid-balanced, cysteamine, any of them — with a bond-building additive measured into the lotion, into the neutraliser, or into both. The reducing agent is the same. The pH is the same. The rods are the same, the timing is the same, and the curl you walk out with is the curl that chemistry was always going to give you.

What changes is the condition of the fibre carrying it. That is a real change and worth paying for on the right head. It is also a smaller change than the category's marketing has ever admitted, and the gap between the two is where clients get hurt.

A bond builder changes the odds inside the range of hair that could have taken a perm anyway. It does not move the line where a perm is refused.

Hold on to that sentence, because everything else on this page is a consequence of it. Almost every problem the plex era has caused in perming comes from people — stylists as often as clients — reading it as a promise about the line rather than about the odds.

What a bond builder actually does

Get this right and the rest of the subject falls into place, because the popular description is wrong in a specific and consequential way.

When a reducing agent opens a disulphide bond, the bond does not become a gap. It becomes two free thiol groups — two sulphur-hydrogen ends, each attached to its own protein chain, each with nothing to hold on to. A neutraliser's job is to bring those pairs back together in their new positions. It never gets all of them.

A bond builder finds those loose thiol ends and bridges them. Olaplex's active, bis-aminopropyl diglycol dimaleate, is a maleate diester, and it works by linking free thiol groups together across a molecule of its own making. That bridge holds the structure while the perm does its work and after it.

The distinction that matters

Bond builders act on free thiol groups. They never rebuild true disulfide connections. A disulphide bond is sulphur joined directly to sulphur. What a bond builder makes is a different linkage, made of a different molecule, holding the same two chains. It is a genuinely useful piece of engineering and it is not the same object, and every claim that plex chemistry “repairs” or “rebuilds” your disulphide bonds is trading on the difference.

Nor is there a percentage to quote. A specific figure for the share a neutraliser manages on its own circulates widely in salon education and cannot be traced to a primary source, so it does not appear here. The principle survives perfectly well without it: the neutraliser never closes every bond it was given, a bond builder catches some of the ones that would otherwise be left hanging, and neither of those statements needs a number to be useful. Bleached hair with a bond builder is still bleached hair

The plex era produced one genuinely dangerous idea: that a bond builder makes it safe to perm hair that could not otherwise be permed. It does not, and the reason is structural rather than a matter of degree.

Where the answer is no

On bleached hair the answer is usually no — and usually is doing real work in that sentence. Highlights count, foils count, and grown-out bleach still sitting on the lengths counts. Bleaching oxidises cystine to cysteic acid; a neutraliser needs two sulphur atoms to close a bond and there is nothing left there to rebuild, so most bleached or highlighted hair takes a curl that drops out within weeks while the hair pays for it. That is the default and the default is no, and no additive moves it. But it is a judgement made on the hair in front of me — how much lightener, how long ago, how much has grown out, what condition the rest is in — and occasionally, in the right hands and at the right strength, it is possible. A bond builder does not change that, because it is not in the business of making bonds where the sulphur has gone. It bridges free thiols — loose ends that still exist. Cysteic acid is not a loose end. It is a dead end, and there is nothing there for the additive to find.

So the honest framing is the one a good stylist uses: the additive raises the ceiling on a good candidate. It does not turn a poor candidate into a good one. Hair that fails an elasticity test fails it with a bond builder in the bowl, and the failure mode is unchanged — it softens early, will not hold the rod, and parts under low load. Nor does it change the other absolute: never over a hydroxide relaxer, in either direction. Hydroxide permanently removes one sulphur from the bond, and no additive puts it back.

Where it goes in the service

  1. Elasticity test and full chemical history. Unchanged, and not relaxed by the premium you are about to pay. Paying more does not buy the right to be vague about what is on your hair.
  2. The wind. Unchanged — rods and geometry are decided by your hair and your cut, not by the additive.
  3. Mixing. The bond builder is measured into the waving lotion at the stated ratio. Guessing the ratio is worse than leaving it out, because the additive can slow the reduction slightly and a stylist who has changed the chemistry without changing the vigilance is the actual hazard here.
  4. Processing. To the underlying perm's rules, room temperature or heat as that chemistry requires, watched on a test curl. Some protocols slow noticeably; that is expected and it is what the test curl is for.
  5. Rinse, and in some protocols a direct application of the bond builder over the rinsed rods before neutralising.
  6. Neutralise, often with more of the additive mixed in, since the oxidation phase is where the loose thiols are decided.
  7. A step-two sealing treatment before the final rinse and style, where the system specifies one.

Expect a supplement on the price. Professional bond systems are expensive per service and the protocol adds time at the basin, so a salon that includes it silently is either absorbing the cost or not using very much. Ask what is being added and at what stage; both answers are informative.

How to check a claim yourself

Two habits will keep you out of most of the trouble in this category.

One: read the ingredient declaration, not the technology page

A bond builder is a declared ingredient. If a brand's marketing pairs its perm with “plex technology” but the lotion's own ingredient list names no bond-building active, the claim is not supported by the label — and the label is the part of the packaging that is regulated. This is not a rare situation. It is worth checking before you pay a premium for it, and any professional supplier will show you the ingredient sheet if asked.

For the same reason I will not tell you what is inside the competing plex systems sold by the other big houses. Several of them are widely described in the trade as maleic acid derivatives. That is plausible and it is not confirmed by the makers' own published declarations, and this library does not print chemistry it cannot stand behind. Peptide-based repair systems are a genuinely different mechanism again — they are used in the same slot in a service and they are not interchangeable in a formula.

Two: know which Olaplex product is which

Bond Shaper is not a perm

Olaplex launched a product called Bond Shaper in 2024, and a good deal of coverage treated it as a new kind of perm. It is not. It is a curl-rebuilding and curl-retention treatment for hair that is already curly. It contains no reducing agent, and no treatment without a reducing agent can turn straight hair curly — that is what a perm is for, and it is the one thing every page in this family has in common.

Anything that changes your hair's shape permanently has opened bonds to do it. If a product claims a permanent shape change and no reduction step, one of those two claims is wrong.

What you actually get for the money

On the right head, a real and noticeable difference — not in the curl, but in the hair around it. Bond-protected perms come out shinier, less frizzy at the ends, and markedly stronger when wet, which is when permed hair is most vulnerable. Over the following months the hair behaves more like your own hair having a good year and less like hair that has been through something.

Where it earns its supplement most clearly is on single-process tinted hair, fine hair and porous virgin hair — candidates who would have taken a perm anyway but would have paid for it in condition. On robust virgin hair it is a reasonable precaution that you would probably have got away without. On hair that fails the test it is money spent on a service that should not be happening.

Aftercare is not different, and it is not optional

Seventy-two hours. Neutralising reforms the bonds but it does not finish the job on the spot — oxidation carries on in air after you leave and the fibre keeps hardening for about three days. In that window what you press into the hair tends to stay: no tight ties, no clips, no hard brushing, and go gently with heat. A bond builder does not shorten that window. Afterwards, follow the washing instruction for the products actually used on you, and use the matching home treatment if the system specifies one — the bridges do degrade with washing and heat. My own position, after three decades of doing this both ways: I use bond builders, they have improved the hair I hand back, and I have never once used one to talk myself into a perm I would otherwise have refused. Those two facts are not in tension. The additive is a safety net for work that was already sound.

Questions

Can a bond builder make my bleached hair strong enough for a perm?

No. This is the most persistent myth in modern hairdressing. Bleach oxidises cystine to cysteic acid, and a bond builder works by bridging free thiol groups — loose ends that still exist. Cysteic acid is not a loose end, so there is nothing for the additive to find. Bleached hair with a bond builder is still bleached hair, and on bleached hair the answer is still usually no.

Does it actually rebuild my broken bonds?

Not as disulphide bonds, no. It bridges the free thiol groups a broken bond leaves behind, using a molecule of its own — in Olaplex's case a maleate diester. That is a genuinely useful linkage and it is not sulphur joined to sulphur. Anyone describing it as rebuilding your disulphide bonds is glossing over the difference.

Will it make my perm less curly?

Generally no. It can slow the reduction slightly, which the stylist handles with test curls rather than by guessing. A properly run bond-protected perm gives the same curl strength as the same lotion without it, in better condition.

Is the Olaplex Bond Shaper a perm?

No. It is a curl-rebuilding treatment for hair that is already curly, launched in 2024, and it has no reducing agent in it. It cannot turn straight hair curly, because nothing without a reduction step can.

Does it cost more?

Yes. Professional bond systems are expensive per service and the protocol adds time at the basin, so expect a supplement on the standard perm price. Ask what is being added and at which stages — a salon that cannot answer that is charging for a word.

If it cannot fix bleached hair, what am I paying for?

Protection of what you still have, rather than replacement of what you have lost. Every perm opens bonds and the neutraliser never closes all of them; a bond builder catches some of the ones left hanging. On healthy or tinted hair that is the difference between hair that feels dry for months and hair that feels like your own. It raises the ceiling on a good candidate; it does not make a bad one good.
