The Sulfite Perm
The floor of chemical reducing power: a sulfite salt at close to neutral pH, swelling the cuticle almost not at all, producing a breathy wave that relaxes entirely within four to eight weeks.
It is the gentlest thing in the salon and the weakest, and on this ladder those are not two facts but one. What makes it worth a page of its own is that the reason it is weak is not the reason most people assume, and the real reason is the most interesting piece of chemistry in the family.

A sulfite salt, and no alkali worth the name
The active is a sulfite or bisulfite salt — sodium, potassium or ammonium — in a lotion sitting at a near-neutral pH of about 6.5 to 7.5. That is close enough to the hair’s own resting 4.5 to 5.5 that the cuticle barely notices it. There is no ammonia, so there is no smell to speak of, and the service is unremarkable to sit through.
Two things limit what it can do, and only one of them is obvious. The first is the pH: with no strong alkali forcing the cuticle open, relatively little reducing agent gets into the cortex in the first place. The second is the more important one, and it is the subject of the next section.
If these salts appear high on the ingredient list, the product is a sulfite wave, whatever the name on the front says. Read the active ingredient, never the range name.
That habit matters more here than anywhere, because this is the chemistry that has been sold under other names for longer than any other. A professional house will put several different reducing systems under one badge, separated by a strength code, and the marketing name is the last place to look for what is in the bottle.
Level of change
The teCsture Scale runs from 1, the tightest pattern, to 10, poker straight — one ladder, ten rungs. What a treatment does is move you a number of rungs. That distance is the job, and it is what the work should be priced on: the level of change, not the bottle.
One rung, occasionally two. If you want more than that, this is not the chemistry to ask for it from.
The gentlest chemistry in the salon, and the weakest.
Sulfitolysis, and why an equilibrium makes a weak perm
Thioglycolate, cysteamine and cysteine are thiols, and thiol reduction runs one way: it opens a bond, and the bond stays open until an oxidiser closes it. Sulfite does something different, and the difference is the whole page.
Sulfite works by sulfitolysis. The sulfite ion attacks the disulphide bond and splits it into two unlike halves — a thiol on one side, and an S-sulfonate on the other. And, crucially, that reaction is an equilibrium. It does not run to completion the way thiol reduction does, and it readily runs backwards.
That equilibrium, and not the size of the ion or the mildness of the pH, is why a sulfite perm is weak. Only a fraction of the bonds are open at any one moment.
This is worth being precise about, because the explanation in general circulation is wrong. Trade sources routinely say the sulfite molecule is large and therefore struggles to get in. The sulfite ion is small. Size is not the reason. The reason is that as fast as the reaction opens bonds it also closes them again, so the fibre is never far from where it started — and a perm can only hold what was open when the rod was on.
The consequences follow directly. Cuticle swelling is close to nil, the native protein structure is left almost entirely intact, and that is the genuine appeal. But there is very little structural memory holding the new shape, so what you get is a soft, breathy wave that relaxes entirely within four to eight weeks. You cannot force a firm curl out of this chemistry at any timing or any strength, because the chemistry does not have the energy to give.
It still needs neutralising
It is tempting to think a chemistry this mild might not need an oxidiser, and that is wrong. The bonds that were opened will not close themselves in their new positions on any useful timescale, and processing runs longer here than on a stronger lotion — twenty to thirty minutes rather than fifteen to twenty-five — because the equilibrium takes its time, not because more is happening. The box said body wave, and that is a wind, not a bottle
Through the 1970s and 1980s manufacturers had a market they could not otherwise reach: people who wanted a hint of volume or a very soft wave, for whom an alkaline cold wave was far too much and a true acid perm needed equipment they did not have at home. Sulfites had long been known in industrial chemistry as very mild reducing agents, and they fitted exactly.
The problem was what to call it. Naming the chemistry on the box would have advertised the weakness, so the kits were branded as body waves and gentle soft waves instead. That created a confusion which has never quite gone away: people assume a body wave is a particular bottle.
It is not. Body wave is a technique — large rods or rollers wound for volume and soft bend — and any number of chemistries can deliver it. Sulfite is one of them, and historically the weakest of them. This library files the technique where it belongs and files this page under the chemistry that was hiding behind the name. Those kits were popular with manufacturers for a reason nobody printed on the packet: a chemistry this weak was very hard for an untrained person to do serious harm with. Uneven winding at home still produced patchy, frizzy results — the wind was always the harder half.
Who it suits, and the trap in the word “gentle”
It suits extremely fine or fragile hair that still passes an elasticity test, and the client who wants the absolute lightest touch of movement and root lift. On healthy virgin hair it will work, and it may work so faintly that the client feels nothing happened.
It does nothing at all on coarse, resistant hair. Not a weak result — no result. There is not enough reducing power to register a structural change in a dense, flat-cuticled fibre, and that appointment is money spent on a wash and blow-dry. That hair needs an alkaline perm.
Gentle is not the same as suitable
This is the trap, and it catches kind-hearted stylists as often as clients. Faced with hair that has been through a lot, the instinct is to reach for the mildest lotion on the shelf. But damaged hair has the least structural memory of any hair, so it is the least able to hold a shape — and mild chemistry gives it the least to hold with. The result is a service that does almost nothing, which the client then blames on their hair.
The honest answer for badly compromised hair is usually no perm at all and a period of repair first. Damage does not make hair hard to process; it makes it dangerously easy to process, which is a different and worse problem. See can your hair take a perm and hair porosity.
Where the answer is no
On bleached hair, usually no — and usually is doing real work in that sentence. Highlights count, foils count, and grown-out bleach still sitting on the lengths counts. Bleaching oxidises cystine to cysteic acid, and the neutraliser needs two sulphur atoms to close a bond — there is nothing left there to rebuild, so most bleached or highlighted hair takes a curl that drops out within weeks while the hair pays for it. That is the default and the default is no, and using the gentlest chemistry in the room is not what softens it. But it is a judgement made on the hair in front of me — how much lightener, how long ago, how much has grown out, what condition the rest is in — and occasionally, in the right hands and at the right strength, it is possible. What to expect, and how to keep a weak wave alive
The service runs the familiar shape: elasticity test, gentle cleanse, thirty to forty-five minutes of winding on large rods or rollers, lotion, twenty to thirty minutes at room temperature watched on test curls, rinse, blot, neutralise. The thing clients notice is the absence of smell.
The first seventy-two hours
Seventy-two hours — and it matters more here than anywhere, because there is so little holding the shape in the first place. Neutralising reforms the bonds but it does not finish the job on the spot: oxidation carries on in air and the fibre keeps hardening for about three days. In that window what you press into the hair tends to stay: no tight ties, no clips, no hard brushing, and go gently with heat. A hair tie on the first evening can take a week off a wave that only had six.
Weight is the enemy
Lightweight volumising mousse, a diffuser rather than a brush, no oils and no heavy creams. A cream that would flatter a firm curl will pull this one straight in a single application. London’s hard water is punishing for the same reason — calcium loads into the hair and there is no structural surplus to carry the extra weight — so chelate every three or four weeks.
Beyond that, follow the washing instruction for the product actually used on you rather than a rule somebody learned thirty years ago. And set the expectation before you book, not after: booked knowingly this is a good idea, and booked in the hope that it will behave like a perm it is a disappointment with a receipt.
The harshness ladder, which is the spine of the chemistry family
Every perm chemistry sits in one order, and once you can see the order the rest of the family makes sense. From gentlest to harshest: sulfite, then cysteamine and the thio-free waves, then true acid, then acid-balanced, then the alkaline cold wave.

The order is not simply the order of pH. A true acid perm runs at a lower pH than a cysteine perm and is harsher than one, because what decides the strength of a perm is the reducing agent and how much of it reaches the cortex, not the alkali carrying it in. pH is the door; the reducing agent is what walks through it. Gentler always means less durable, and there is no free end to this ladder. Every increment of kindness is paid for in weeks of wear.
That is the sentence the whole chemistry family rests on, and it is the one thing no manufacturer has ever found a way around. Every few years something is launched that claims to have done it. What has actually happened, every time, is a move of one step down the ladder with better marketing attached.
Questions
Why is it called a soft perm?
Because a sulfite salt at neutral pH is a very weak reducing agent and opens only a small fraction of the hair's disulphide bonds, so the result is a soft, subtle wave rather than a defined curl. The name describes the outcome accurately, which is more than can be said for some of the others it was sold under.
Is a sulfite perm the same thing as a body wave?
Historically, in marketing terms, often yes — many older kits used sulfite chemistry and put “body wave” on the box. But body wave is a technique, meaning large rods or rollers wound for volume and soft bend, and any chemistry can produce it. The name describes the wind, not the bottle.
Why did mine drop out so fast?
Because that is the design. Sulfitolysis is an equilibrium reaction that alters very few bonds and leaves the hair's core structure largely intact, so the fibre reasserts its own shape within four to eight weeks. If you want months, you need a step or two up the ladder.
Can it damage my hair?
It is the least damaging perm chemistry there is — almost no cuticle swelling, and the protein chains left largely undisturbed. That is not the same as saying it is right for hair that is already compromised: any chemical reduction applied to hair with no elasticity left can still lead to breakage, and the gentleness of the lotion does not decide that.
Can I use it on coarse, thick hair?
No. Coarse resistant hair rejects it outright. The reducing action cannot open enough bonds in a dense, flat-cuticled fibre to register any visible change, so you get nothing rather than a little. That hair belongs on an alkaline lotion.
If sulfite is the gentlest, is it the safe choice for damaged hair?
No, and this is the most useful thing on the page. Gentle is not the same as suitable. It will not do much harm, but it will not give damaged hair bounce either, because damaged hair has the least structural memory to hold a shape with. You pay for a service that does almost nothing and then blame your hair. The honest answer there is usually no perm, and repair first.
