The Acid-Balanced Perm

The middle of the ladder and the default for most heads: buffered thioglycolate just above neutral, worked at room temperature, giving a firm curl with more give in it than a cold wave and no waiting under a dryer.

If you have had a perm in a British salon in the last thirty years and nobody told you which chemistry it was, this is the most likely answer. It is also the category with the most misleading name in the trade, and it is worth twenty minutes to understand why.

Buffered thioglycolate, just above neutral

The acid-balanced perm was designed as a compromise and it is an unusually successful one. The alkaline cold wave gave a firm curl and was hard on tinted hair. The true acid perm was kind to tinted hair and required half an hour under a hood dryer for a wave that dropped in three months. What manufacturers wanted through the early 1980s was the first one's convenience with the second one's manners.

What they arrived at is a thioglycolate lotion buffered down to pH 7.8 to 8.2, or in some products a blend of thioglycolate with GMTG at the same pH. Because the pH scale is logarithmic, 8.0 is not “a bit less than” 9.5 — it is dramatically less alkaline. Enough to lift the cuticle at room temperature, not enough to blow it open.

No cap, no dryer, no activator bottle. Fifteen to twenty-five minutes on the rods at whatever temperature the room happens to be.

The result is what most people actually want from a perm and cannot easily name: a curl with structure in it that still moves. Firmer and longer-lived than a true acid wave, softer and considerably less punishing than a cold wave, and it grows out by loosening rather than by leaving a hard line where your natural hair starts.

Level of change

The teCsture Scale runs from 1, the tightest pattern, to 10, poker straight — one ladder, ten rungs. What a treatment does is move you a number of rungs. That distance is the job, and it is what the work should be priced on: the level of change, not the bottle.

“Acid-balanced” is a trade term, not a definition

Here is the thing the category does not advertise. “Acid-balanced” is trade language, not a textbook classification. There is no standards body that defines the phrase, no agreed pH window that a product must meet to use it, and a formulation sitting at 7.8 to 8.2 is, strictly speaking, mildly alkaline. The name describes an intention — gentler than a cold wave, no external heat — rather than a chemistry.

You can see the gap plainly in manufacturers' own paperwork. Zotos Professional's current perm formula reference chart, dated 2024, sorts its entire range into four classes: acid, alkaline, exothermic and thio-free cysteamine. There is no acid-balanced column at all. The category everyone in the salon talks about does not appear in the classification the maker actually uses.

The rule that follows from this

A range name tells you nothing. Read the active ingredient. A professional house sells several different reducing systems under one badge, separated only by a strength code on the box, and the marketing name on the front is the last place to look for the chemistry.

Zotos runs four current families and they are not one chemistry each: Quantum spans acid, alkaline and exothermic variants; Design Freedom is an alkaline ammonium thioglycolate perm; Acclaim is acid; and Texture EFX is neither of the above — the manufacturer's own chart and product pages file it as a thio-free cysteamine perm. It is described as acid-balanced in a good deal of trade writing, and that is simply wrong.

The practical version for a client: ask what is in the bottle, not what it is called. If the answer is a thioglycolate at around pH 8 applied at room temperature, this is the page you are on, whatever the label says. More on the house behind that chart at Zotos.

The default for most heads — and the ones it is not for

This is the most broadly applicable perm chemistry there is, which is exactly why it became the workhorse. It suits normal hair, fine hair, moderately porous hair and single-process tinted hair, and on tint it has been the safest effective option in the salon for three decades.

It is wrong at both ends of the ladder. On deeply resistant coarse virgin hair — the glassy, flat-cuticled kind — pH 8 does not open enough for the lotion to get in, and the perm falls straight inside a week. That hair needs alkaline chemistry or a digital hot perm. And on hair that has been through too much, the middle of the ladder is not a safe harbour: an acid-balanced perm on badly compromised hair still breaks it.

Where the answer is no

On bleached hair the answer is usually no, and usually is doing real work in that sentence. Highlights count, foils count, and grown-out bleach still on the lengths counts. Bleaching oxidises cystine to cysteic acid; the neutraliser needs two sulphur atoms to close a bond, and there is nothing left to rebuild, so most of this hair takes a curl that drops out within weeks while the hair pays for it. That is the default and the default is no. A gentler lotion does not change that: the exception, where there is one, is a judgement made on the hair in front of me — how much lightener, how long ago, how much has grown out. Never over a hydroxide relaxer either, in either direction and at any interval.

The one preparation question that catches people

Your stylist needs to know exactly what colour is on your hair, and a home box dye with metallic salts in it is the answer that changes the plan. Metallic dyes react with the reducing lotion, and the reaction generates heat inside the hair that nobody applied and nobody can control. This is not a moment to be vague or embarrassed about what you did in the bathroom in 2019. I would rather be told now than find out on the rods.

Misdiagnosis is this perm's characteristic failure. The middle ground only works if the hair actually belongs in the middle.

What the service involves

  1. Elasticity test and a full chemical history. Wet hair is stretched and released; every colour, perm and treatment on the hair is accounted for. See can your hair take a perm.
  2. Clarifying wash. Gently — no hard scalp work before a chemical service.
  3. The wind, thirty to forty-five minutes. Three or four rod sizes across a head, not one; the wrap decides the shape and the lotion only decides its strength.
  4. Lotion on. There is an odour but it is noticeably milder than a cold wave, because there is far less ammonia doing far less work.
  5. Fifteen to twenty-five minutes at room temperature, watched on a test curl. When the first check is taken depends on the product — professional systems specify anything from two minutes to ten, so your stylist follows the sheet for the lotion in their hand rather than a number off a website.
  6. Rinse thoroughly, blot every rod, neutralise. The oxidiser closes the bonds in their new positions and the perm is not finished until it has been on. See neutralising a perm.

Two to two and a half hours, most of it winding. There is no dryer phase to allow for, which is the practical reason this chemistry displaced the true acid perm.

What happens if you add heat

Clients ask this constantly, usually because they have seen a cap go on somebody else's head, and it deserves a mechanical answer rather than a warning.

An acid-balanced lotion already carries enough pH to lift the cuticle on its own at room temperature. The processing time on the instruction sheet is calculated on that basis — on the rate at which the reducing agent gets into the cortex through a cuticle opened chemically rather than thermally. Put a cap and a dryer on top and you change the rate but not the schedule: the lotion arrives in the cortex faster than the timing assumes, and the same twenty minutes now delivers considerably more reduction than twenty minutes was meant to deliver.

That is over-processing, and over-processed hair is not recoverable. It softens early, will not hold the rod, and parts under low load. Nothing burns and nothing dramatic happens in the chair; the damage is arithmetic, and it shows up when the rods come off.

Which is why the exothermic and endothermic systems exist

A perm built to run warm is timed for warmth from the outset — a true acid perm under a hood, or the exothermic version of an alkaline perm that brings its own activator. Heat is not the enemy. Heat that the timing did not expect is.

What you get, and how long you keep it

A reliable, well-defined curl that holds its shape but has give in it — the perm people mean when they say they want it to look like their own hair on a good day. Four to six months is the honest figure. It outlasts a true acid perm by a comfortable margin without acquiring the alkaline perm's near-permanence, and it softens as it goes rather than sitting rigid until it is cut off.

That softening is the reason many people prefer this chemistry once they have had both. There is a growing-out line, because there always is, but it is a gradient rather than a step, so the point at which you have to decide about the next appointment is a matter of taste rather than of necessity.

The first seventy-two hours

Seventy-two hours, with nothing washed, tied, clipped or pinned and no hard brushing. Neutralising reforms the bonds but it does not finish the job on the spot — oxidation carries on in air and the fibre keeps hardening for about three days, so a band or a grip on the first evening can set as a dent you cannot brush out. Go gently with heat in that window too. After that, follow the washing instruction for the product actually used on you rather than a rule from thirty years ago.

Then the routine

Sulphate-free shampoo; alternate a protein treatment with a moisture one, since the first reinforces the fibre and the second lays a slightly raised cuticle flat; a chelating shampoo every four weeks against London's calcium, which loads into permed hair and stiffens the curl. What actually makes a perm “acid-balanced”?

In practice, a pH of about 7.8 to 8.2 and processing at room temperature. Strictly, nothing — the phrase is trade language rather than a defined classification, and a lotion at pH 8 is mildly alkaline whatever the name on it says. Judge the bottle by its active ingredient and its pH, not its label.

Do I need to sit under a dryer?

No. That is the whole point of the category. There is enough alkalinity in the lotion to open the cuticle at room temperature, which is why this chemistry replaced the true acid perm in most salons.

Is it safe for coloured hair?

It is the best conventional option for single-process tint, and has been for decades. Moderate cuticle swelling means much less colour loss than an alkaline perm. Highlights and bleach are a different question entirely, and the answer there is usually no — the default, judged on the hair in front of me rather than off a page.

How long does an acid-balanced perm last?

Four to six months, softening gradually. If yours went flat within a fortnight the likeliest explanation is not the lotion but the diagnosis — resistant hair under-processes on this chemistry — or a rod too large for your length to make two and a half wraps.

Will it work on thick Asian hair?

It depends where on that range you sit. Fine to medium hair, usually yes. Genuinely coarse, resistant, glassy hair, usually no: it will under-process and fall out within days, and an alkaline perm or a digital hot perm is the right tool.

The box says acid perm but there is no dryer. Which is it?

Acid-balanced. A true acid perm is endothermic and cannot process without applied heat, so a room-temperature product using the word “acid” is this category, using the older word for marketing reasons.
