The Air Perm

The perm sold as having no neutraliser, which is not what it is: oxidation still happens, it is simply done slowly by the oxygen in the room instead of quickly by a bottle, with nobody watching and nothing to stop it.

I include this page partly because clients ask about it and partly because it proves something the rest of this library takes for granted. If you want to understand why the neutralising step matters, the clearest way is to look at what happens when a salon leaves it out.

There is no such thing as a perm without oxidation

A perm is two reactions. A reducing agent opens some of the disulphide bonds holding your hair in its present shape; a rod decides which sulphur ends up next to which; and an oxidiser closes the bonds in their new positions. Take away the second reaction and you do not have a gentler perm. You have half a service.

What an air perm actually does is remove the bottle, not the reaction. The reducing lotion goes on as usual and processes as usual. Then, instead of a liquid oxidiser at the basin, the hair is rinsed at length with water, the rods come off, and the client is sent into the world with the job unfinished. Oxygen in the atmosphere then does the oxidising — slowly, partially, and unsupervised.

“Chemical-free neutralising” describes nothing. Oxygen is a chemical. It is simply a weaker and slower one than the chemical the salon declined to buy.

Nor is the reduction step in any way reduced. The lotion that opened the bonds is exactly the lotion any other perm would have used, and it is the more aggressive half of the process. A service marketed as avoiding chemicals has kept the chemistry that changes your hair and dropped the chemistry that finishes it.

Level of change

The teCsture Scale runs from 1, the tightest pattern, to 10, poker straight — one ladder, ten rungs. What a treatment does is move you a number of rungs. That distance is the job, and it is what the work should be priced on: the level of change, not the bottle.

What happens after you leave

This is where the argument is settled, and it is worth being precise, because the figures in circulation are wrong in both directions.

After any perm, oxidation continues in the air and the fibre keeps hardening for up to about 72 hours. That is true of a conventional perm too — it is exactly why the aftercare rule is seventy-two hours, with no tight ties, no clips, no hard brushing and heat used gently. The difference is what the hair is doing during that window. After a proper neutralising step, the great majority of the bonds are already closed and the three days are a matter of settling and finishing. After an air perm, the three days are the perm.

Which makes an ordinary day into a hazard

A hair tie, a clip, a hat, a pillow, a scarf, or falling asleep on damp hair — any of these presses a shape into a fibre that has not yet re-hardened, and it sets. On a conventional perm those things risk a dent. Here they can take the wave out entirely, in the wrong shape, on one side of the head.

And there is a second risk that nobody advertises. Because no oxidiser was applied to halt the reducing action, any lotion left in the hair by an incomplete rinse keeps opening bonds after you leave — for hours, with no test curl, no timer and nobody present. Over-processing at home, quietly, is a real outcome of this method and it is not reversible.

That is also why the rinse in this service is so long. Fifteen to twenty minutes, rather than the usual five to ten, because water is being asked to do the job that an oxidiser normally does: end the reaction.

The neutraliser is not a finishing product

Every other page in this library assumes this. This is the page that demonstrates it.

Clients tend to picture the neutraliser as a rinse-off conditioner at the end — the bit at the basin before the blow-dry. It is not. It is one of the two chemical reactions that constitute a perm, and it is the one that decides whether the shape you were wound onto is the shape you keep. A concentrated liquid oxidiser closes the bonds in five to ten minutes, evenly, on every rod, under supervision, at a controlled pH: hydrogen peroxide formulations run acid at about 2.5 to 4.0, sodium bromate ones nearer 6.0 to 7.0. Atmospheric oxygen does the same chemistry at a fraction of the rate and none of the concentration. Many of the opened bonds never find a partner at all, so the fibre ends up with fewer connections than it started with and less structural memory than the wind requires. The wave is weak on the day and gone within a month or two.

Skipping the neutraliser does not remove a chemical from the process. It does the same chemistry badly, slowly and without supervision.

The machine that shares the name

Here is a genuine source of confusion, and one worth clearing up before you book anything with the word “air” in it, because two entirely different things are being described.

A method

The air perm on this page

A conventional reducing lotion, a long water rinse, and no applied oxidiser. The saving is a bottle of neutraliser. The cost is the strength and reliability of the result.

The air perm processor

A professional processor that draws gently warmed, humidity-controlled air through tubes fitted over the wrapped rods, so the moisture and temperature of the hair are managed through the cycle. It produces soft curls by controlled drying, and it finishes with a liquid neutraliser like any other perm.

The machine is a Japanese piece of equipment with matching lotion ranges built for it, and it is not a heated-rod digital perm either — that is a third machine again, working by a different principle, covered at digital perm machines and the digital hot perm. Three services, one adjective.

So: if a salon offers you an “air” anything, one question settles it. Is a neutraliser applied? If yes, you are being offered a machine service and the word describes the processor. If no, you are being offered the method on this page.

Note how many of these name the absence rather than the method. That is the tell: the service is defined by what it leaves out.

Who this is for, honestly

Very few people, and I would rather say so plainly than pad the answer. The result is a soft, undefined wave of no great conviction that relaxes completely within four to eight weeks, in exchange for three days of extreme care and a real chance of over-processing at home. A cysteamine perm gives a better wave that lasts three to five months, with the reaction stopped in the salon by someone watching it.

It will do nothing at all on thick, coarse or resistant hair — there is not enough force in the method to register.

Where the answer is no

On bleached hair the answer is usually no — and usually is doing real work in that sentence. Highlights count, foils count, and grown-out bleach on the lengths counts. Bleaching oxidises cystine to cysteic acid; the neutraliser needs two sulphur atoms to close a bond and there is nothing left to rebuild, so most bleached or highlighted hair takes a curl that drops out within weeks while the hair pays for it. That is the default and the default is no. It is a judgement made on the hair in front of me — how much lightener, how long ago, how much has grown out, what condition the rest is in — and on rare occasions, in the right hands and at the right strength, something is possible. Passive oxidation is if anything the worst version to attempt it with, because the hair spends three days open and unfinished, so on this page assume no. Never over a hydroxide relaxer either, in either direction.

One recommendation I will not make

You will find this service recommended to people with diagnosed allergic contact dermatitis to peroxide and to bromate, on the reasoning that it avoids both. That is a medical judgement and this page cannot make it. If you have a documented reaction to an oxidiser, the conversation to have is with a doctor and then with your stylist together, holding the actual product ingredient sheets — not with a website that has never met you. What I can say is that avoiding an ingredient by leaving your hair chemically unfinished for three days is a trade, not a free pass, and it should be made with someone qualified to weigh both sides of it.

If you want a genuinely gentle wave with a proper finish, the bottom of the ladder is at the sulfite perm, and every option there is neutralised in the salon before you go home.

Questions

Is a no-neutraliser perm chemical-free?

No. The waving lotion that opens your hair's bonds is the more aggressive of the two chemicals in a perm and it is used exactly as normal. Only the second one is omitted, and the oxygen that replaces it is itself a chemical — a weaker, slower one, working without supervision.

How long does it take to set?

Oxidation and re-hardening continue for up to about 72 hours, which is why the aftercare window is seventy-two hours. On a conventionally neutralised perm those three days are the fibre finishing and settling. Here they are the perm itself, which is why the same three days are so much riskier.

What is a “water perm”?

The same thing under a friendlier name. It refers to rinsing the lotion out with water and then applying no oxidiser at all. The water is not neutralising anything; it is only removing the reducing agent, and not always all of it.

Will it last as long as a normal perm?

No. Four to eight weeks is realistic. Many of the opened bonds never find a partner during passive oxidation, so there is less holding the shape than the wind requires, and the wave goes flat well before a properly neutralised one would.

Is it safer for damaged hair?

No. It avoids the mild drying effect of a liquid oxidiser and pays for that by leaving the hair unfinished and vulnerable for three days — and any lotion left behind by an imperfect rinse keeps working with nobody watching. Whether hair can be permed is settled by an elasticity test, not by which neutraliser is used.

Is an “air wave” the same as an air perm?

Usually not, and it is worth asking. There is a category of professional processor that draws warmed, humidity-controlled air through tubes over the rods during processing and then finishes with an ordinary liquid neutraliser.
