The Root Perm
Chemistry confined to the first inch or two at the scalp, the lengths sealed under barrier cream and left straight — volume you can see and texture you cannot.
The kindest technique in this library for damaged lengths, and the only one that cannot avoid putting chemistry at the root. Both of those are true at once, and which matters more depends entirely on where your damage sits.

Chemistry that stops an inch from the scalp
A root perm is a placement decision, not a chemistry. The stylist coats the mid-lengths and ends in a thick occlusive barrier cream, wraps or clips only the hair closest to the scalp, and applies lotion strictly to that first inch or two. Everything below stays straight, uncoloured by the process, and structurally exactly as it arrived.
The technique started in the 1980s as a maintenance job rather than a service in its own right. Clients came back for their second and third perms, and stylists found that laying a fresh cold wave over hair that had already been permed left the older hair softening early, unable to hold the rod, and parting under low load. To touch up regrowth safely they wound the whole head but put lotion only on the new hair at the scalp, coating the fragile ends in heavy cream. It worked — and in working it proved that selective placement was chemically viable at all. Every partial technique in this block descends from that discovery.
A stack perm and a root perm can use the same bottle, the same rod and the same processing time and produce opposite heads of hair. The only decision that differed was where the chemical went.
Level of change
The teCsture Scale runs from 1, the tightest pattern, to 10, poker straight — one ladder, ten rungs. What a treatment does is move you a number of rungs. That distance is the job, and it is what the work should be priced on: the level of change, not the bottle.
This is the one page in the library where the scale stays still. A root perm does not change your curl pattern anywhere — it changes the angle the hair leaves your scalp at, and everything below the first inch is untouched.

Why a bend at the root reads as volume and not as curl
This is the part worth understanding, because it explains why a root perm looks like nothing has been done and yet the hair is visibly higher.
When the neutraliser closes the bonds, that first inch is permanently bent — usually into a sharp upward C, pushing the hair away from the scalp before it goes anywhere else. What sits above it is the rest of the strand: straight, heavy, and untouched. That length falls over the bend and covers it completely.
The bend is a pillar. You see the height it creates and you never see the pillar, because the straight hair is lying on top of it.
That is the whole illusion. Root volume is not the hair being fuller; it is the hair being held away from the skull by a centimetre or two of engineered bend, with the rest of the head draped over the scaffolding. It is also why the technique fails immediately on very short crops — there is no length to fall over the bend, so the bend itself is visible, and a visible bend at the root looks like a mistake rather than like volume.
The one page in this library where the rule is inverted
Hair has to travel round the rod at least two and a half times to form a complete S. Below that you get one wide bend rather than a curl.
On every other page in this block, that sentence is a warning. Here it is the specification. A root perm is deliberately asking for one bend and nothing more, and the first inch of hair is physically incapable of circling anything two and a half times — which is exactly why the technique produces lift with no visible texture.
So the arithmetic settles two questions in advance. A root perm cannot give you curl, however it is asked for and whatever is used: there is not enough hair on the tool to make one. And the tools are large and shallow by necessity — large rods, or the semi-circular pins described below — because a small rod on an inch of hair produces a tight kink at the scalp that the lengths cannot hide.

Volume pins, and the kit behind them
Western root perms are done with ordinary rods: barrier cream on the lengths, a small or medium rod wound tightly down to the scalp, lotion applied only to the hair touching the head. It works, and it demands a steady hand, because a liquid lotion wants to run.
The Korean method — 붕리편, ppuri peom, the root perm — solves the running problem with the formulation rather than the technique. It uses a cream reducing lotion thick enough that it will not drip, applied to the first inch at the crown, and then clamps the roots into a sharp upward curve with small semi-circular plastic pins rather than rods.
Call them what the maker calls them
The English-language trade calls these “root clips”, which is a description rather than a name. The maker’s own words are volume pins, roll pins and volume rolls. The best-known kit is ADD PERM, a Korean salon-only root-lift system covered by Republic of Korea patent 10-1456604, filed in March 2014 — a kit of volume pins, roll pins and volume rolls sold to be combined with a cold or exothermic perm rather than used as a chemistry of its own. It is a real product, which is worth saying, because a good deal of what circulates about root-perm tools is not.
Whether the tool is a rod or a pin changes very little about what happens chemically. It changes a great deal about control, which on this technique is the whole game. See the Korean perm.
New hair, resistant hair, and a warm scalp
Root hair is the newest hair on your head. It has an intact cuticle, it has lost none of its 18-MEA, and it is therefore low in porosity and genuinely resistant — lotion penetrates it slowly and reluctantly. Left there, that would simply mean a longer processing time.
It is not left there. The scalp is warm, and warmth accelerates the reaction. So the same inch of hair is simultaneously the hardest hair on the head to process and the hair sitting in the warmest place on the head, and those two facts push in opposite directions at a speed nobody can predict from a chart.
Resistant hair in a warm place is the least controllable combination in perming, and a root perm puts you in it on purpose.
That is why this service is watched rather than timed, why test curls are taken frequently, and why I will not publish a processing figure for it. It is also the reason a root perm done badly goes wrong quickly rather than gradually.
The safest technique, and the one that cannot avoid the risk
The kind half
Damaged lengths are never touched
If your lengths carry old colour, heat damage or years of weathering, this is the gentlest way in the library to add volume — because the lotion never reaches them. They sit under barrier cream and come out of the appointment exactly as they went in. No other technique can say that.
The unkind half
Damage at the root has nowhere to go
If the damage sits at the scalp — bleach that has only grown down an inch, a relaxer line near the root, a regrowth boundary from a previous perm — this is the one technique that cannot work around it. Every other wrap can be started lower. A root perm has nowhere else to go.
So the consultation question is not “is your hair damaged?”. It is “where is it damaged?”, and the answer decides the service rather than adjusting it.
Bleach, and why the answer is usually no
Usually no — and usually is doing real work in that sentence. Lightening oxidises cystine to cysteic acid; the neutraliser needs two sulphur atoms it can no longer find, so most bleached or highlighted hair takes a curl that drops out within weeks while the fibre pays for it: it softens early, will not hold its shape, and parts under low load. That is the default and the default is no. Highlights, foils and grown-out bleach all count. It is a judgement made on the hair in front of me — how much lightener, how long ago, how much has grown out, what condition the rest is in — and occasionally, in the right hands and at the right strength, it is possible. Bleach an inch from the scalp is the version this technique meets most often, a client with lightened hair and a flat crown, and it is the version where I almost never find room to say yes. Never over a hydroxide relaxer, either, in either direction. Hydroxide works by lanthionisation, which removes one sulphur permanently, and thio chemistry has nothing to work with afterwards. See perm versus relaxer.
Eight weeks, and what happens after
Longevity here is set by your growth rate rather than by the chemistry, which makes this the one technique in the library whose lifespan is not a rod decision. Hair grows about half an inch — a little over a centimetre — a month. Within six to eight weeks the bend has travelled that far from the scalp, and a bend an inch or two out from the head is no longer a pillar holding the hair up. It is a ridge in the middle of the root area, and it can start to read as one.
This is a subscription, not a purchase. A grown-out root bump on someone who does not rebook looks worse than no perm at all.
That is the honest trade-off against a weave perm, which gives less lift and asks for almost no maintenance because it grows out invisibly. If you know you will not be back in two months, take the weave.
Lotion bleed, the failure to know about
A runny lotion escaping past the barrier cream onto the lengths processes hair that is not on any tool and is not properly neutralised afterwards. What it leaves is a horizontal band of frizz where the bleed reached, sitting in otherwise straight hair. It is visible, it is permanent, and it is the single reason this is a salon-only service — you cannot see the back of your own head well enough to apply barrier cream accurately.
Day to day, activate the volume with heat: dry with the head tipped forward, or lift the roots away from the scalp with a brush while the air is hot. And keep the minerals off it — calcium weighs down a fine root faster than anything else and pulls that C-curve flat, so a chelating wash every three or four weeks does more for the lift than any product.

Questions
Will a root perm make my hair curly?
No, and it cannot. The first inch of hair is not long enough to travel round any tool two and a half times, which is what a complete curl requires, so what forms is a single upward bend. The straight lengths fall over it and hide it. You see height; you do not see texture.
How long before it looks odd?
Six to eight weeks. Hair grows about half an inch, a little over a centimetre, a month, and the bend is permanent, so it travels down the head with the hair. Once it sits an inch or two out from the scalp it is a ridge rather than a lift. Either rebook, or have it softened or trimmed out.
Is it safe on damaged hair?
It depends entirely on where the damage is. If your lengths are compromised and your roots are new hair, this is the gentlest way in the library to add volume, because the lotion never touches the damage. If the damage is at the root itself, this is the one technique that cannot avoid it, and the answer is no.
Why did mine drop out so fast?
Usually one of three things. Root hair is new, low in porosity and genuinely resistant, so a lotion too mild for it never fully takes. Or the base tension was wrong — a root perm needs the hair held up at the scalp, and rolled flat it lifts nothing. Or the hair simply grew, which is not a failure at all.
Can it break hair at the scalp?
It can, through error rather than through the technique. Thio chemistry laid over hydroxide-relaxed hair will part at the scalp, and so will hair held by an elastic band pulled tight across a swollen, softened root. Both are avoidable and neither is subtle when it happens.
What are the pins the Korean method uses?
