The Straight-Set Wrap
The head divided into nine rectangles and the rods rolled in straight columns, each directly behind the one before it — the first wrap an apprentice learns, and the one every other wrap in this library is a departure from.
This is the wrap that gave perms their reputation. It is also the one worth understanding first, because the brick lay, the directional wrap and every clever bit of zoning done in a good salon are all defined by what they do differently from this grid.

What a straight set actually is
Nine rectangles: a panel across the top, a panel over the crown, one down each side, and a stack of panels down the back to the nape. Inside each panel the rods go on in straight columns, every rod directly behind the one before it, and the head is worked methodically from the front hairline backwards. That is the whole pattern. For something like fifty years it was simply how hair was permed.
The sectioning rule is a relationship rather than a measurement. The base matches the rod — no wider than the rod is long, no deeper than the rod is thick. You will find figures in inches quoted for this, and they are worth ignoring, because rods come in several lengths and a number lifted off one page gets applied to the wrong tool on the next. Hold the rod against the section. If the section is bigger than the rod, the section is too big, whatever the number said.
Nothing else about the wrap is unusual. Each rod is wound croquignole, from the ends towards the scalp, and any lotion at all can go over the top of it. What makes a straight set a straight set is the pattern the bases make on the scalp, and nothing else at all.
The lotion decides how strong your curl is and how long it lasts. The pattern decides whether anybody can see your scalp.
The splits, and the mechanism behind them
Rods stacked in continuous columns leave continuous partings. While the reducing lotion is working, the hair at the root is being held open along the edge of every rod, and the neutraliser then sets the root direction it finds. That parting is no longer a comb line that will brush away. It has been built into the hair.
When the head dries, the hair falls open along those channels and shows a line of scalp running from crown to nape. The trade calls them splits. On thick hair they are a nuisance; on fine or thinning hair they are brutal, because the grid finds every sparse patch and draws a line through it. It is the commonest reason someone comes in convinced a perm thinned their hair, when what it actually did was part it.
The crown is where it is worst
Most people have a whorl at the back of the crown — hair growing out of a circular pattern rather than lying in one direction. Lay a rigid column across a whorl and the split lands exactly where the hair is already reluctant to cover. That produces the round bare patch clients read as a bald spot, and it is a placement failure rather than a chemical one. A brick lay exists mainly to stop it.
Two things follow from this. The splits are permanent in the sense that they last as long as the permed root does — they grow out, they do not wash out. And no lotion prevents them. A gentler bottle, a smaller rod and a longer processing time all leave the lines exactly where they were.
The technique did not get worse
This is the part usually left out, and it is the most interesting thing on the page.
The straight set was designed for an era in which a perm was not a finished look. It was scaffolding. The client came back weekly to have her hair set on large rollers and brushed out into a shape, and that brushing dispersed the roots across the partings so that the lines never showed at all. The wrap and the routine were built for each other, and together they worked perfectly well for fifty years.
Then the routine went. Wash-and-go replaced the weekly set, hair started being air-dried at home by people with no intention of brushing anything out, and a wrap that had always been half of a two-part system was suddenly being asked to be the whole thing. Nothing about the geometry changed. What changed was that there was no longer anything hiding it.
If you remember your mother’s perms looking better than this, what you are remembering is the set, not the wrap.
I think that is worth saying plainly, because the alternative conclusion — that perms simply used to be better — is wrong and it stops people asking the right question. The right question is not which lotion your mother had. It is what pattern the rods went on in, and what she did to her hair between appointments. The modern answer to seamlessness is not a stronger chemical. It is a staggered pattern, and it costs nothing but attention.
The large-rod question, answered with arithmetic
The request arrives constantly: a big soft beach wave, please, off a standard wrap and a large rod. The usual answer given is that it can technically be done and it will look wrong — large rods in a rigid grid give square, artificial columns of hair with obvious partings between them. That is true, and it is also the wrong answer, because it is an answer about taste and the real objection is a measurement.
Hair has to travel round the rod at least two and a half times to form a complete S. Below that, no amount of chemistry produces a curl.
This is not a school of thought; it is what a wave is. One and a half turns gives a single wide bend, and a single wide bend on dry hair reads as an odd blow-dry that is gone by the second wash, because there was never a curl there to hold. So your length sets your largest usable rod, and on short or mid-length hair a genuinely large rod often cannot complete the turns at all. How it would have looked never arises. There is nothing to look at.
The honest conversation is therefore about rods rather than patterns: a smaller rod and a curlier result than the photograph, or more length first, or nothing. I would rather have that at the desk than after the neutraliser. The same arithmetic explains why the nape drops first on a grid-wrapped head. It is the shortest hair on the head, and a uniform pattern rolled with a uniform rod is most likely to have asked the impossible of it.
The training grid, and the control experiment
Nobody is defending the straight set as a modern look. It survives for two better reasons.
Reason one
It cannot be faked
Rolling a clean nine-section grid teaches precise parting, even tension and section control, and the errors show up in straight lines where everyone can see them. A junior who can wind a grid cleanly has earned the right to depart from it. One who cannot will produce a mess in any pattern, only a less legible one.
Reason two
It is the control experiment
Everything the other wraps achieve is defined against this grid. The brick lay hides the partings it leaves. The directional wrap maps the rods onto a haircut instead of a rectangle. Understand the grid and the rest of the block reads as a set of deliberate corrections rather than a list of names.
There is also a small live constituency for it: clients who still have their hair set weekly and want structure underneath a shape they are going to build anyway. For them the wrap does exactly what it was invented to do, and the splits genuinely do not matter, because the set covers them. That is not nostalgia. It is the correct tool for a routine most people no longer have.
Underneath any pattern sits the angle each rod was held at, which is what decides root lift. That is base control, and a straight set gives you no exemption from it — a grid rolled at one elevation across a head that is not evenly shaped is how you end up with volume everywhere except where you wanted it.
How it is executed, and the check nobody skips
- Consultation and elasticity test. Hair health, and an honest conversation about how you dry your hair. If you air-dry and part nothing, this is not your wrap.
- Clarifying wash. The cuticle is prepared and product build-up removed, then the hair is towel-dried, not blasted.
- The nine sections. The head is parted into its rectangles with a tail comb and each is clipped away. Clean partings here are the whole job; everything after this is bookkeeping.
- The wind. Ends papered, rods rolled from the front hairline backwards in columns, sides rolled down towards the ears. Bands fastened across the top of the rod, never dug into the root.
- Lotion, processing, test curls. Applied evenly across an organised grid, which is the one genuine advantage of the pattern: nothing is hidden and nothing is missed.
- Rinse and neutralise. A longer rinse than feels necessary, then the oxidiser, which locks the root direction — splits included — into the hair.
Uniform tension is the point, and the problem
A straight set applies identical tension to every section by design. Hair is not identical: old colour bands, weathered patches and previous chemical work sit at different strengths on the same head, and a pattern that treats every section alike has no mechanism at all for treating a weak one differently. So on this wrap every section is checked for elasticity before winding, not a representative one. That is the opposite of the advice that will do elsewhere, and it is the specific reason a grid punishes hair with a history.
Bleach
Usually no — and usually is doing real work in that sentence. Bleaching oxidises the sulphur that holds hair together into a form no neutraliser can rebuild: cystine becomes cysteic acid, and the neutraliser needs two sulphur atoms it can no longer find. So most bleached or highlighted hair takes a curl that drops out within weeks while the hair pays for it. That is the default and the default is no. Highlights count, foils count, and grown-out bleach still sitting on the lengths counts. No pattern on this page changes any of it. But it is a judgement made on the hair in front of me — how much lightener, how long ago, how much has grown out, what condition the rest is in — and occasionally, in the right hands and at the right strength, it is possible. Wearing one, and how long it lasts
If you have a straight set, you have to style it. That is not a criticism of your hairdresser; it is the deal the wrap was built on. A dryer and a round brush, or large heated rollers, will physically pull the hair across the channels and blend the columns together. Air-dry it and the partings will be the first thing anyone sees.
Longevity belongs to the rod rather than the pattern. A tight coil on a small rod holds six to eight months, a classic mid-size rod four to six, a large-rod wave two to three. The splits, meanwhile, last as long as the permed root does. Nothing you buy shortens that.
In London the exposed channels take a particular kind of punishment: hard-water minerals settle on the root cuticle in the strips where the scalp shows and stiffen it, so a chelating wash every few weeks does more for the finish than any styling product. In strong sun those same strips are bare scalp, and they burn.
If what you actually wanted was texture you do not have to think about, this was never the pattern for it. A staggered wrap gives you the same curl with nothing showing, and a mapped one gives you curl that falls into your haircut. Both are on the trolley already. Ask for the outcome — no visible lines, hair I can push around — and a stylist who has thought about placement will tell you which pattern gets you there. Questions
Why are there straight lines of scalp showing in my new perm?
You were almost certainly wound in a straight set. Rods stacked in continuous columns hold the hair open at the edge of every rod, and the neutraliser sets that parting into the root direction, so the hair falls open along those lines when it dries. It grows out rather than washing out. A brick lay staggers the bases so there is no continuous line to fall open along.
If it leaves lines, why do schools still teach it?
For mechanical discipline. A clean nine-section grid demands precise parting, even tension and immaculate section control, and it shows every error in a straight line. Once a junior can do that, they are allowed to break the pattern deliberately. It is also the control experiment: every other wrap is easiest to understand as a specific correction to this one.
Is this the kind of perm people had in the 1980s?
Largely, yes, and for decades before that. What is different is not the wrap but what happened afterwards. Those perms were brushed out vigorously into a shape, and the brushing dispersed the roots across the partings so the lines never appeared. The wrap was designed to be half of a routine.
Can a straight set be done on large rods for a beach wave?
Usually not, and the reason is arithmetic rather than taste. Hair has to travel round the rod at least two and a half times to form a complete S, and on short or mid-length hair a genuinely large rod cannot complete the turns. Does a basic wrap damage hair more than a better one?
No. Damage potential comes from the lotion, the timing and the condition of the hair, not from the sectioning pattern. What a straight set does is apply identical tension everywhere, which means it has no way of going easier on a weak section — so every section gets tested, not one.
My mother had perms for thirty years and they never looked like this. What changed?
Not the wrap. The routine around it. She was set on rollers weekly and brushed out, and that brushing hid the grid lines completely; the perm was structure underneath a style, never the finished look. When wash-and-go replaced the weekly set, the same wrap had nothing covering it and began to look like a mistake overnight. The modern equivalent of that seamlessness is a brick lay, which gets there without the weekly appointment.
