Keratin & Hair Straightening in Yorkshire: Leeds, Sheffield, York, Bradford, Harrogate and Hull
Short answer: Yorkshire splits west to east. Sheffield (~48 mg/l) and Harrogate (~60) have soft moorland water, and West Yorkshire around Bradford gets 1,000 mm+ of rain, so frizz there is a humidity problem. York (~240 mg/l) and the east drink hard water with less rain, so hair there fights mineral build-up. Leeds sits in between.
I’m Zoltan, a Mayfair texture specialist: perming since 1991, straightening since 1999. York is 1h45 from London on the fastest train, Leeds just over two hours.
West and South Yorkshire: soft water, wet hills
Yorkshire Water: softer water in the moorland west. Local figures (Yorkshire Water 2024, via WaterGrade): Sheffield 48 mg/l, Harrogate 60 mg/l, Leeds (Cross Green zone) 133 mg/l.
Met Office 1991–2020: Bingley (between Leeds and Bradford) 1,057 mm over 156 rain days; Sheffield 832 mm over 133 days. That’s a lot of damp air, and damp air pulls hair back into frizz through its temporary hydrogen bonds.
What this means: smoothing treatments stay clean and bright in soft water, but humidity keeps testing them. If you’re re-straightening with an iron every morning even after keratin, look at a treatment that actually changes the hair.
York and the east: hard water, drier
York is around 240 mg/l, in the “hard” band (over 200 mg/l, per the Drinking Water Inspectorate). Church Fenton near York gets only 620 mm over 116 rain days. Here the problem is mineral on the hair: rough feel, dullness, and smoothings that seem to fade. Research on actual damage is mixed, but a clarifying wash every couple of weeks is cheap insurance.
Which treatment
- Frizz only → Straightment Semi, back after 1–4 months.
- Keratin / Brazilian blow dry / nanoplasty result → Straightment Demi. About 60% of the curl out, and it stays out; roots after 4–8 months.
- Straight, even in Pennine drizzle → Straightment Permanent (the Japanese-straightening family). 80%+ out on treated hair, for good. Roots after 6–18 months.
Straight talk: Harrogate soft water plus a good smoothing is about as easy as it gets. York hard water plus a cheap “express keratin” is about as short-lived as it gets. Same county, different advice.
