Argan Oil and Hair Serums

The short answer

Pure argan oil and an argan-containing serum are not the same formula. Both may have a useful finishing role; neither earns a permanent repair promise from its name.

Pure argan oil and an argan serum are different products. Either might help you finish the hair. The name does not earn either one a promise of permanent repair.

After a texture service

Start with the finish you want, manageable lengths and your treatment’s aftercare. A soft, glossy result does not tell me fragile hair can take more chemicals. I want your daily handling easier, without hiding the question of what has been done to the hair.

My verdict: pay for a job you need, not a story about liquid repair.

Pure oil versus a finished serum

Read the ingredients. Pure oil is different from a mix of silicone, esters, perfume and plant oils, even if argan is the big word on the front. A silicone-led serum can give a useful light finish. It is not worse just because it is not pure argan.

Do not guess that the named oil is 1%, 10% or most of the bottle. The ingredient-labelling guidance allows some flexibility below 1%. Parfum is not a percentage line you can use on every label. Price, colour and smell do not prove authenticity either.

What a finishing product can reasonably be asked to do

I want easier lengths and the amount of shine you actually like. It should spread without making the roots greasy or weighing everything down. You should be able to wash it out properly.

Those are useful jobs. We do not need to pretend they permanently join split ends or return the hair to an untouched state. A smooth photograph cannot measure that.

“Dry oil”, “organic” and heat claims

Dry oil describes a feel or a way of selling it. It does not promise one recipe. Cold-pressed tells you something about getting the oil out, not how it will work on your head.

If you are using heat, choose a finished product with suitable heat-protection directions. Argan, a silicone name or a high price do not prove protection on their own. I would not swap the heat protector for plain oil.

Fit it into the routine

If one conditioning heat protector does what you need, stop there. A finishing oil can be your second product if it adds something useful. If you already use leave-in and gel for curls, do not automatically add oil as well.

Try it before a holiday, while the rest of the routine is familiar. See how heavy it feels and how the hair handles. You might need less than you think, or none at all.

Questions

Is every argan treatment pure argan oil?

No. Read the whole ingredient list and what it is meant to do.

Is a silicone serum a bad purchase?

Not automatically. It might do a useful conditioning or finishing job.

Can I estimate the oil percentage after Parfum?

Not reliably. The list does not give the percentage or one dividing point for every bottle.

Does argan oil prove heat protection?

No. Check what the actual product promises and how it tells you to use it.

Must I use it to finish a curl routine?

No. Leave-in and gel already make my usual two-product curl pair.

What I look for

Before I choose anything, I look at:

  • Your natural pattern.
  • Your condition.
  • Your previous chemical history.
  • Your colour history.
  • What you want the hair to do.
  • How far the hair needs to move.

I use the Zoltan tecSture Scale™ as part of that assessment.

When I say no

If the hair cannot safely do what you are asking, I say so.

Sometimes it is: No.

Sometimes it is: Not yet.

Sometimes it is: We need to do less.

Sometimes the hair needs repair first.

I would rather lose an appointment than lose your hair.
