Rehab was my Compton Barbican & City salon, renamed. After Compton I opened Rehab in August 2014 in the same rooms at 161 Whitecross Street, on the street market between Old Street and Barbican. It was the ground floor and basement of an old pub, and I built it as a creative, happy home for a small group of independent stylists who had all chosen to be there.
We cut out what clients didn't need to pay for. No receptionist — you booked online, day or night. No shampoo girl — we did it ourselves, because it's more personal. You made your own tea, or had a drink at our bar. The idea was simple: it should feel like visiting a close friend, with a professional attitude.
There was more than hair. Massage in a room of its own, a chair-massage pop-up on the market itself, visits to offices nearby, beauty and art on the walls.
The name came with me to Soho as Hair Rehab, for the work I'm known for: Brazilian blow-dries, smoothingDOWN, perms and repair for hair that had been through too much.
