The short answer

Separate permanent straightening on your own hair from any decision about added hair.

I offer work on hair with extensions only to my Loyal Clients. For a client with extensions my preferred treatment is Straightment DEMI, not Permanent straightening, and there is no guarantee on previously treated hair.

I would not plan Japanese hair straightening through a fitted set of unidentified extensions. Permanent straightening on your own hair and processing the extension hair are separate decisions, and neither is approved by the phrase “100% human hair”. The consultation must settle your chemical history, treatment area and extension plan before booking.

Permanent straightening on hair with extensions

I would not usually do Permanent straightening on hair with extensions. It needs two sets of test strands first, and it is a long, complicated process. Preferring a keratin treatment (Straightment DEMI) with the extensions out is part of why.

Why I separate permanent straightening from smoothing

Straightment Permanent is my permanent-straightening service. It should not inherit the instructions for Straightment Semi or Demi just because the desired finish is smooth.

As a primary-source example of the distinction, a Japanese straightening manufacturer describes a process involving a straightening solution, heat styling and neutralisation. source I am not using that manufacturer’s claims to certify any extension or describe my formula. It shows why an appointment needs a named system and a real history rather than a broad label.

My rules for Permanent are no washing during the first 48 hours. Colour is at least two weeks later, after assessment. These rules do not turn an unknown extension into suitable treatment hair or establish the date for a later fitting.

For Semi, Demi and Brazilian-treatment questions, go to the smoothing guide.

Give me the complete history

  1. List straightening, relaxing, smoothing, perms, bleach and colour you remember.
  2. Separate new growth from previously treated lengths in the conversation.
  3. Bring product or service names if another salon treated the hair.
  4. Include extension processing history as a separate record.

Do not decide that an old treatment no longer matters because the hair feels different. I need to assess what remains on the head and where any proposed service would act.

A manufacturer’s professional FAQ also treats previous chemical services and colour timing as relevant to its own straightening decisions. source Its intervals and compatibility statements belong to that system; they are not my permission to process your hair.

Choose the result for your own hair first

If you are planning extensions rather than wearing them, my preference is to establish the intended shape and condition of your own hair before choosing the final extension match. Bring photographs of how you actually wear your hair, including an ordinary wash day.

A sleek finish in an appointment photograph is not the whole brief. I want to know whether you will wear the lengths straight, turn the ends under, tie your hair or add removable pieces for events. Those choices belong in the discussion before you buy a set.

Where professional removal is needed to assess or plan the service, agree that separately with the relevant practitioner. Removal is not a home preparation step. There is no instruction here to dissolve bonds, open rings or peel tapes.

Do not treat added hair by analogy

An extension could be human hair and still have a supplier restriction against chemical alteration. source I will not infer approval for permanent straightening from a heat-tool symbol, a colour allowance or the word Remy.

The exact manufacturer instructions, processing record and professional assessment must support the intended use. If the history cannot be established, I do not offer a confident answer about processing the added hair. Matching a different piece is an option to discuss; repeating chemistry on an unknown length is not an automatic blending solution.

Where clip-ins fit into the plan

Removable pieces let us discuss the finished look while keeping them out of the chemical service. That is why I regard them as a simpler planning option than assuming that fitted rows can stay involved throughout. It is not a promise of zero risk.

I still want your own hair assessed for the pressure and placement of clips. Repeated pulling can cause hair loss. source We also need an agreed reintroduction point: never use clip-ins to sidestep my first 48-hour restriction or another system’s instructions. Pain or tension means stop wearing them and arrange assessment.

Your appointment checklist

  • Own-hair chemical history and current condition recorded.
  • Extension fibre, processing and attachment identified.
  • Service area and any professional removal discussed.
  • First 48 hours planned without an incompatible event hairstyle.
  • Colour kept at least two weeks after Permanent, subject to assessment.
  • Fitting or clip-in timing agreed individually.
  • Maintenance contact and warning signs understood.

Continue to extension aftercare for the routine or damage assessment if breakage, pulling or shedding is already happening.

Questions

Can I straighten only the hair above a row?

That needs an in-person service-area assessment. A visible gap above a row does not establish that the process can be performed appropriately.

Can the extensions go back in when the 48 hours finish?

That is not an automatic clearance. The first-wash restriction is only one part of the fitting decision; preparation, attachment instructions and your hair’s condition still matter.

Can extensions hide damaged ends while I have Permanent?

I would assess the damage first. Concealing it does not settle whether your own hair is suitable for a chemical service or additional attachment load.

What I look for

Before I choose anything, I look at:

  • Your natural pattern.
  • Your condition.
  • Your previous chemical history.
  • Your colour history.
  • What you want the hair to do.
  • How far the hair needs to move.

I use the Zoltan tecSture Scale™ as part of that assessment.

When I say no

If the hair cannot safely do what you are asking, I say so.

Sometimes it is: No.

Sometimes it is: Not yet.

Sometimes it is: We need to do less.

Sometimes the hair needs repair first.

I would rather lose an appointment than lose your hair.
