Air-drying a digital perm

Zoltan Vargyai · permingUP since 1991

The short answer

Squeeze out the water, scrunch in a light cream, and leave it alone until it’s dry. Most of the frizz people blame on a permUP comes from touching it while it dries.

Step by step

  1. After conditioning, squeeze the water out; don’t rub.
  2. Rake a light curl cream or leave-in through the lengths.
  3. Scrunch upwards a few times to group the waves.
  4. Leave it. No fingers, no brush.
  5. When it’s completely dry, scrunch once more to soften it.

If you’re in a hurry

A diffuser on low heat and low speed, cupping the hair rather than blowing it about.

Wet vs dry

A heat permUP looks looser when wet and tighter when dry. Judge it dry.
