C-curl perm: the soft inward bend at the ends

Zoltan Vargyai · permingUP since 1991
Updated 29 September 2026

The short answer

A C-curl permUP puts a soft, inward bend into the ends of the hair, so it falls in a C shape. It isn’t a curl you’d notice as a perm: it’s the shape of a good blow-dry, without the blow-dry.

What it looks like

Straight lengths, with the ends turning softly under, or turning out for a flicked look. Seen from the side, the hair makes a C.

How it’s done

The ends are wound on large rods and processed, usually as a heat permUP so the shape comes out soft and bouncy when dry. Only the part that needs the bend is permed, not the whole head.

Who it suits

Shoulder-length to mid-length hair that goes flat or flicks the wrong way. It’s popular on hair that has been straightenedDOWN, because it brings back a little movement without undoing the smoothness.

What it isn’t

It won’t give you volume at the root and it won’t make curly hair straight. If your hair is frizzy, the frizz needs sorting first.

How long it lasts

The bend is in the ends, so it lasts until you cut it off. Regular trims shorten it; most people redo it every few months.
