Digital perms and humidity

Zoltan Vargyai · permingUP since 1991

The short answer

A digital permUP usually handles humidity better than a blow-dry, because the wave is in the hair, not styled on top. What humidity brings out is frizz, and frizz comes from dryness, so moisture is the fix.

Why a perm copes

A blow-dry is a temporary shape: damp air undoes it. A permUP has changed the hair’s shape, so rain and steam don’t make it drop.

Where frizz comes from

Hair that is dry, or a little over-processed, pulls moisture out of the air and swells unevenly. That’s the halo of fuzz on a humid day.

What helps

  • Condition every wash and use a leave-in.
  • Scrunch in a light cream or gel while the hair is wet, then don’t touch it while it dries.
  • Avoid brushing once it’s dry.

When it’s the perm

If the frizz is new and the hair feels rough, the permUP may have been too strong. That needs treatment and trimming, not more product.
