Digital perm on thick, resistant hair
The short answer
Thick, coarse or resistant hair can take a digital permUP very well and often holds it longer than fine hair. It just needs more time, the right lotion strength and even application so every strand processes.

See WavementUP →Why some hair resists
Some hair has a tight, smooth outer layer that doesn’t let chemistry in easily. It’s often thick, coarse and very straight, and it has never been coloured.
What I change
- Sometimes a pre-softening step, so the lotion can get in.
- A stronger lotion, or longer processing, watched closely.
- Thinner sections, so nothing is missed in a thick head.
What to expect
A strong, long-lasting wave. The appointment takes longer, simply because there’s more hair and it takes longer to process.
The weight problem
Very long, very thick hair can pull a loose wave straight under its own weight. Layering, or a slightly smaller rod, keeps the shape.
