Growing out a digital perm

Zoltan Vargyai · permingUP since 1991
Updated 2 October 2026

The short answer

A digital permUP grows out softly: the new growth comes in with your own texture while the permed lengths keep their wave, lower and lower down. Trims every couple of months keep it looking deliberate.

How it grows out

The permUP is in the hair that was permed. It doesn’t move. As your hair grows, your natural texture fills in from the root, so the wave sits further down the head each month.

Is there a line?

Usually not a hard one, because the wave softens gradually. The difference is more visible if your natural hair is very straight and the permUP was tight.

Making it look intentional

  • Trim the ends every eight to ten weeks.
  • Style the root with a little volume so it matches the lengths.
  • Let the old permUP go gradually rather than cutting it all at once.

Starting again

When there’s enough new growth, I permUP the root area and protect the old perm, so the ends aren’t processed twice.
