Perm with hair extensions: matching curl without guessing
The short answer
Separate perming your own hair from chemically changing the extension hair.

Japanese hair straightening in London →Having extensions does not give me enough information to approve a perm, and human extension hair is not automatically suitable for perming. I first separate changing your own hair’s shape from matching added hair to that shape. Wavement Cold, Wavement Hot and a crown-volume request all need an individual plan.
A perm on hair with extensions takes time and costs more
A perm on hair with extensions takes a long time. We test first, you see the curl, and then we decide together. That makes it a costly route, so I only offer it to my Loyal Clients, and my preferred option is still a keratin treatment (Straightment DEMI) with the extensions out.
My view: a curl match starts before the appointment
Bring a photograph of the curl you want, but also show me your own hair after an ordinary wash. Tell me where you want movement: roots, mid-lengths, ends or the whole silhouette. “More volume” could mean several different results.
I do not promise that a perm will make two existing textures identical. My starting preference is to decide the intended result for your own hair, then discuss extension hair that works with it. That is my consultation approach, not a guarantee that every extension collection offers a suitable match.
A manufacturer can prohibit chemical alteration of its extensions altogether. source That matters even if you only want a small change in curl. See the fibre and attachment guide before assuming that a human-hair label answers the question.
Cold and Hot are service names, not extension permissions
Wavement Cold and Wavement Hot are my named perm services. I assess your own hair and desired result before recommending a route; “Hot” is not an instruction to heat a fitted extension, and “Cold” does not approve chemical contact with an attachment.
For both, my rules are no washing during the first 48 hours. Colour is at least two weeks later, after assessment. Another salon’s system has its own instructions. Do not borrow a wash rule from a different perm or from my same-day-wash smoothing services.
I also want to know about previous colour, lightening, straightening and smoothing. A missing treatment history is a reason to investigate, not a space to fill with an assumption.
Matching hair is different from treating added hair
- Describe how you want your own hair to fall.
- Identify the current extension fibre, construction and processing history.
- Decide whether matching a suitable texture is preferable to changing the existing piece.
- If processing the added hair is still proposed, obtain specific manufacturer permission and professional assessment first.
A curl in the packet does not tell me how the piece was made or what further processing it permits. I want the supplier’s instructions, not an inference from the shape. Where the supplier says no, an experimental strand is not an override.
Crown lift needs its own assessment
A root-perm request above extension rows is not automatically cleared by saying the rods will sit higher. I need to examine the available hair, existing attachments and intended placement before deciding whether a suitable service can be planned.
Tell me whether the apparent flatness is new, whether a row has moved and whether anything pulls when you lift the hair. If soreness or tension is present, stop and arrange an attachment assessment before planning volume. Dermatology guidance treats painful tight styles as a warning, not something to tolerate for the finished look. source
I do not give at-home sectioning instructions for chemical work around a fitted row. A consultation may lead to a different styling plan or discussion of professional removal and reassessment.
Teach the curl upwards
Once washing and styling are permitted for your treatment and attachment, my method is curls UP. Support the lengths, scrunch upwards and use an agreed diffuser approach. Do not rake the curl down in an attempt to make the two textures behave identically.
This is my styling method, subject to the extension supplier’s handling instructions. The attachment area stays free of conditioner and leave-ins; choose approved products for the lengths. My routine uses a maximum of two total leave-on products, including heat protection, oil, gel and leave-in conditioner.
If bedtime handling is agreed, arrange the curl loosely upwards without pulling at the rows and use silk. That does not authorise a tight high ponytail or override the first-wash period. The full two-zone care routine explains the separation.
Your consultation checklist
- Current fitted or future extensions clearly distinguished.
- Own-hair chemical history and desired curl recorded.
- Fibre, supplier and attachment instructions available.
- Crown lift separated from an all-over curl request.
- No-wash first 48 hours planned.
- Colour at least two weeks later, after assessment.
- Handling demonstrated without scalp tension.
Questions
Can human hair extensions be permed?
Only consider that question for an identified product with explicit supplier permission and professional assessment. “Human” alone is insufficient.
Can I have extensions fitted straight after a perm?
A perm is possible with extensions, but my preferred treatment for a client with extensions is Straightment DEMI. I offer work on hair with extensions only to my Loyal Clients, and there is no guarantee on previously treated hair. For a perm I agree the interval in consultation: it must respect the first 48-hour wash restriction and the attachment’s own preparation requirements, and you will most likely need a colour update afterwards.
Should I brush the curls out to blend them?
Do not improvise a new handling routine. Show me the mismatch and follow the agreed fibre instructions and curls-up routine; persistent blending problems belong in a review.

What I look for
Before I choose anything, I look at:
- Your natural pattern.
- Your condition.
- Your previous chemical history.
- Your colour history.
- What you want the hair to do.
- How far the hair needs to move.
I use the Zoltan tecSture Scale™ as part of that assessment.
When I say no
If the hair cannot safely do what you are asking, I say so.
Sometimes it is: No.
Sometimes it is: Not yet.
Sometimes it is: We need to do less.
Sometimes the hair needs repair first.
I would rather lose an appointment than lose your hair.
