Rosemary Oil for Hair
The short answer
There is human research worth discussing. It does not establish that every rosemary oil, water spray or infusion works as well as minoxidil.

There is human research on rosemary oil worth reading. It does not prove every rosemary oil, water spray or infusion works as well as minoxidil.
If you are concerned after a texture treatment
First tell me what is happening. Are treated lengths snapping, or is hair coming from the scalp and getting thinner? Oil is not the answer to every change. Bring the treatment and colour history. Get new, patchy or persistent loss checked medically.
My verdict: an interesting study does not tell us why your hair is falling out.
What was compared
A 2015 randomised study compared rosemary oil with 2% minoxidil for six months. There were 100 people with androgenetic alopecia. Both groups had higher hair counts at six months. The study did not find a significant difference in that result.
That is not proof they are equal. A study can miss a difference without proving two treatments are interchangeable. There was no placebo group, and it was not a comparison with every way of using minoxidil. It is one limited study, not an answer to every kind of hair loss.
A bottle of rosemary water is another preparation
Essential oil, oil infused with rosemary, boiled herb water and a finished hair product are different. Sharing a plant name does not let them share the same study result. The amount, what it is mixed into and how you use it matter. An ingredient list cannot promise the result from that trial.
Tingling or warmth does not prove new growth. Do not apply neat essential oil or make a stronger mix to hurry it up. I would not give you a home dilution as a medical treatment.
What I would ask before buying
Ask what is being promised. What exactly was tested, on which hair-loss problem, and compared with what? Is the seller quoting a study about something different from the bottle in front of you?
You do not need a science degree. Just notice when the sales pitch starts with one product and finishes by claiming the proof for another.
Keep treatment and cosmetics separate
If a clinician has recommended treatment, do not replace it because a video calls rosemary natural minoxidil. Tell them what you want to use and about any reaction. Keep ordinary washing and care for your lengths simple.
I cannot promise regrowth or give a treatment dose here. I can help you look after the texture and avoid extra chemical stress while the cause is checked.
Questions
Did the trial prove rosemary equals minoxidil?
No. Not finding a statistically significant difference is different from designing a study to prove two treatments equivalent.
Was it compared with every minoxidil strength?
No. This trial compared it with 2% minoxidil.
Can rosemary water claim the result?
Not automatically. Rosemary water is a different preparation.
What concentration should I make at home?
I am not prescribing an essential-oil dilution or medical treatment dose here.
Should I stop medical treatment to try it?
Discuss it with your clinician. Do not use a cosmetic remedy instead of finding the cause and getting suitable treatment.
What I look for
Before I choose anything, I look at:
- Your natural pattern.
- Your condition.
- Your previous chemical history.
- Your colour history.
- What you want the hair to do.
- How far the hair needs to move.
I use the Zoltan tecSture Scale™ as part of that assessment.
When I say no
If the hair cannot safely do what you are asking, I say so.
Sometimes it is: No.
Sometimes it is: Not yet.
Sometimes it is: We need to do less.
Sometimes the hair needs repair first.
I would rather lose an appointment than lose your hair.
