Keratin & Hair Straightening in the Midlands: Birmingham, Nottingham, Leicester, Coventry and Derby
Short answer: The Midlands splits down the middle. Birmingham drinks soft water piped from Wales (about 29–51 mg/l). Nottingham (~227), Leicester (~247) and much of the East Midlands drink hard. Same treatment, different lifespan. In soft-water Birmingham a smoothingDOWN tends to stay fresher. In the hard-water East Midlands, go stronger and clarify.
I’m Zoltan, texture specialist in Mayfair since 2018, straightening hair since 1999. Birmingham is 1h16 from my chair, Coventry under an hour.
Birmingham and the West Midlands: soft water, wetter weather
Birmingham’s water comes from the Elan Valley reservoirs in Wales, which Severn Trent measures at 28.9–51.2 mg/l. That’s properly soft. Soft water rinses clean, lathers easily and leaves little mineral on the hair.
The weather is wetter than the South East: Winterbourne, Birmingham, averages 809 mm and 133 rain days (Met Office 1991–2020). So in Birmingham your hair’s opponent is humidity, not minerals.
Nottingham, Leicester, Derby: harder water
Severn Trent’s own summary: its supply ranges from soft to moderately hard. Local zone figures (Severn Trent data via WaterGrade): Nottingham 227 mg/l, Leicester 247 mg/l (both “hard”), Coventry 161 mg/l (moderately hard). Nottingham (Watnall) gets 716 mm over 126 rain days.
Hard water leaves mineral on the hair. The research is mixed on whether that actually damages it, but it makes hair feel rough and smoothings feel short-lived.
Which treatment
- Frizz only → Straightment SemiDOWN, back after 1–4 months (later in soft water).
- The keratin / Brazilian / nanoplasty result → Straightment DemiDOWN. About 60% of the curl out, and what comes out stays out; roots after 4–8 months.
- Straight (the Japanese-straighteningDOWN family) → Straightment PermanentDOWN. 80%+ out on treated hair, for good. Roots after 6–18 months.
Straight talk: Birmingham has a big, varied texture community, from loose waves to tight coils. A relaxer and a Japanese straightener are different chemistry and don’t mix. If you’ve ever been relaxed, say so. That one sentence saves hair.

Booking locally
The Midlands has strong salons. Pick one that names the active ingredient, strand tests coloured, bleached or relaxed hair, asks your full history, and never overlaps straightener onto treated hair.
