Keratin Treatment & Japanese Hair Straightening in London: A Mayfair Specialist's Honest Guide
Short answer: London gives your hair two problems: hard water (around 266 mg/l in the City supply zone) and wet weather, around 112–120 rain days a year. SmoothingDOWN treatments fade faster here than in soft-water cities. So choose the strength for London, not for the brochure, and clarify your hair every couple of weeks.
I’m Zoltan, perming since 1991 and straightening since 1999. In London: Molton Brown in Hampstead, then the Yuko salon on Curzon Street, Compton in Covent Garden, Josh Wood Atelier, a private room in Soho, and my own chair on Maddox Street, Mayfair since 2018. Along the way the work has been in Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, Tatler, The Sunday Times and HELLO!. I perm, I straighten, and I still cut.
London’s weather and your hair
The Met Office’s 1991–2020 averages give 615 mm of rain and 112 rain days at Heathrow, and 722 mm and 120 rain days in Hampstead. Then there’s the Underground in August. Warm, damp air is exactly what gets into hair’s temporary hydrogen bonds and pulls it back into frizz. Your blow dry isn’t failing. Physics is winning.
London’s water
Thames Water says most of its water is hard because it comes through chalk. The City zone measures around 266 mg/l, and the Drinking Water Inspectorate calls anything over 200 “hard”.
Being honest about the science: a 2013 study found no loss of hair strength after 30 days of hard water. A small microscope study found more mineral deposited on the hair. What I see at the chair is that hard-water hair feels rougher, looks duller and makes a smoothingDOWN treatment seem to fade sooner. So:
- Clarify (a chelating shampoo) every couple of weeks.
- A filter shower head is optional. It helps some people. It’s not a cure.
Which treatment for London hair
- Frizz, keep your shape → Straightment SemiDOWN, back after 1–4 months.
- “Keratin” / Brazilian / nanoplasty: less curl, much less frizz → Straightment DemiDOWN. About 60% of the curl out, and what comes out stays out; roots after 4–8 months.
- “Japanese straightening”: straight → Straightment PermanentDOWN. 80%+ of the curl out on the treated hair, for good. Roots after 6–18 months.
- Someone else’s straightening gone wrong → correction, after a strand test. Read keratin ruined my hair.
Straight talk: People search for “the best hair straightening salon in London”. Nobody’s the best for every head. The best one for you asks what’s been on your hair, names the product, strand tests, and tells you when not to do it.
