Keratin & Hair Straightening in Manchester, Liverpool and the North West: Soft Water, 170 Rain Days
Short answer: The North West has some of the softest water in England (Manchester about 28 mg/l) and some of the wettest weather (around 170 rain days a year across the district). So your frizz is a humidity problem, not a water problem. SmoothingDOWN treatments stay fresher in soft water. But if damp air still beats your blow dry by 10am, you probably want a treatment that changes the hair, not one that coats it.
I’m Zoltan, a texture specialist in Mayfair. Manchester is just over two hours from my chair on the fastest train.
The water: soft, which helps
United Utilities says most of its water comes from upland reservoirs and is “soft or very soft”. Some harder borehole water in the south of the region gets blended in. Local figures (via WaterGrade): Manchester 28 mg/l, Liverpool 68 mg/l. Soft water means less mineral on the hair, better rinsing, and a smoothingDOWN treatment that isn’t being dulled from the outside.
The weather: this is your real opponent
Met Office 1991–2020 averages:
- Rochdale: 1,197 mm, 171 rain days
- Woodford (south Manchester): 868 mm, 156 days
- Crosby (Liverpool coast): 824 mm, 147 days
- The wider North West & North Wales district: about 1,338 mm, 170 days
Damp air puts water into hair’s temporary hydrogen bonds, and that pulls it back to curl and frizz. Only a chemical straightener resets the stronger bonds, which humidity can’t touch.
Which treatment
- Frizz, keep your shape → Straightment SemiDOWN, back after 1–4 months.
- The “keratin” / Brazilian blow dry result: calmer, looser, far less frizz → Straightment DemiDOWN. About 60% of the curl out, and it stays out; roots after 4–8 months.
- You want it to stay straight in the rain → Straightment PermanentDOWN (the Japanese-straighteningDOWN family). 80%+ of the curl out on treated hair, for good. Roots after 6–18 months.
Straight talk: People sometimes search “Brazilian blow dry near me” in Manchester when what they actually want is hair that survives a wet Tuesday in Piccadilly Gardens. Those can be two different treatments. Say which one you want out loud.

Booking locally
Manchester and Liverpool have excellent salons. Choose one that names the product and its active ingredient, strand tests coloured or previously straightenedDOWN hair, asks your full history, and never overlaps a permanent straightener.
