Keratin Treatment & Hair Straightening in the South East: Southampton, Reading, Oxford, Milton Keynes, Brighton, Kent and Surrey
Short answer: Across Hampshire, Berkshire, Oxfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Surrey, Sussex and Kent, your hair has two opponents: hard chalk water and damp air, more of it on the coast. A smoothingDOWN treatment chosen with that in mind lasts longer. A keratin or Brazilian blow dry calms hair for months. A permanent (Japanese-style) straightening changes it for good.
I’m Zoltan, texture specialist on Maddox Street, Mayfair, perming since 1991 and straightening since 1999. Most of the South East is under an hour or so from my chair by train.
The water: hard, almost everywhere
The South East drinks mostly hard water, because it rises through chalk. South East Water and Thames Water both say so. Oxford’s supply is around 276 mg/l. The Drinking Water Inspectorate calls anything over 200 “hard”.
The honest science: it’s mixed. One 2013 study found no loss of hair strength after 30 days of hard water. A small microscope study found more mineral deposited on the hair, but no real surface damage. What I see from the chair: hard-water hair feels rougher, looks duller, and smoothingDOWN treatments seem to go sooner. A clarifying (chelating) wash every couple of weeks helps. A filter shower head is optional, not magic.
The weather: drier inland, damp on the coast
Met Office 1991–2020 averages: Oxford 682 mm / 118 rain days; Shoreham (Brighton coast) 753 mm / 119 days. Across the wider South and South East district it’s 806 mm / 124 days. On the coast, from Southampton and Portsmouth to Brighton and Kent, sea air keeps the humidity up.
Why it matters: damp air feeds hair’s temporary hydrogen bonds, which pull it back towards curl and frizz. Chemical straighteningDOWN changes the stronger disulphide bonds, and humidity can’t touch those.
Which treatment
- Frizz only, keep your shape → Straightment SemiDOWN, back after 1–4 months.
- What people call keratin, Brazilian blow dry, nanoplasty or hair botox: less curl, much less frizz → Straightment DemiDOWN. About 60% of the curl out, and what comes out stays out; roots after 4–8 months.
- Straight (the “Japanese straighteningDOWN” family) → Straightment PermanentDOWN. 80%+ of the curl out on treated hair, for good. Roots after 6–18 months.
Straight talk: No treatment is 100%. “Poker straight forever, zero damage” is a sales line. And if you swim in the sea every week, no smoothing will last as long as the leaflet says.

Booking locally? Check four things
- They name the product and show you the ingredient list.
- They strand test bleached, relaxed or previously straightenedDOWN hair.
- They ask your full history: colour, henna, box dye, earlier keratin. A relaxer followed by a thio straightener is the classic disaster.
- They never overlap a permanent straightener onto hair that’s already done.
Coming to Mayfair
- Fastest trains to London: Guildford 32 min, Oxford 45 min, Canterbury 51 min, Brighton 58 min, Southampton 1h05. Maddox Street is a short walk from Oxford Circus and Bond Street (Elizabeth line, which also serves Reading).
- Not sure what you need? An online consultation (£9.95) before you buy a ticket. In person it’s 30 minutes (£74.95). Neither fee comes off the treatment.
- Prices by length: Semi £149.95–£269.95; Demi all-over from £199.95; Permanent all-over from £299.95.
Quick answers
Is keratin bad for your hair? Done right, on the right hair, no. Read is keratin treatment safe.
Keratin or Japanese? Keratin calms; Japanese-style changes. See the comparison.
Thin hair? Often fine at a lighter strength. That’s why the strength is chosen at the chair.
