For men · permUP and keratin damage

Will it wreck my hair? The straight answer.

Done right, on hair that can take it, no, it doesn't wreck it. And on a short cut, whatever it does cost the hair is gone with your next few haircuts.

Why short hair is the safe place to try it

On long hair, a treatment sits on hair that is years old and stays there. On a short cut, the treated hair is weeks old, and your barber takes it away every few weeks. There is no grow-out line, and nothing to undo if once was enough.

Where damage actually comes from

  • Bleached or heavily coloured hair taking chemistry it cannot handle.
  • The wrong strength for the hair in front of you.
  • A rushed neutraliser on a permUP, which makes it drop in days and leaves the hair rough.
  • Too much heat from the iron on a smoothing treatment, close to the scalp.
  • Treating over somebody else's treatment without knowing what it was.

Every one of those is a reason I read the hair first

Pattern, colour history, previous treatments, how the hair stretches and how it takes water. Most of the result, and most of the risk, is decided before anything is mixed.

When I say no

Bleached, fragile or already over-processed hair changes the answer: sometimes to a lighter strength, sometimes to not yet, sometimes to no. You'll be told plainly, before anything's mixed. Being told no is me doing my job, not losing your business.

Perm or keratin: which is harder on the hair?

They work differently. A permUP breaks bonds and reforms them around a rod; a smoothing treatment is set in with heat. Either can go wrong for the reasons above; either is fine on hair that can take it, done carefully. On short hair, both are gone with your cuts.
