Thinning on top? Here's what I can do, and what I can't.
I can't grow hair. Nobody with a pair of scissors can. What I can do is make what you've got look like more: lift at the root, texture through the top, and a cut that stops showing the scalp.

What makes it look fuller
- Root volumeUP: lift at the crown and front, lengths left alone. From £199.95.
- Wavement Cold, top only: texture makes fine hair look thicker and gives the clay something to grip. From £139.95.
- The cut: often the biggest win. Shorter sides, a bit of weight kept on top, and no flat parting line. That is your barber's job; I don't cut men's hair, but I can refer you on if you need one.
When the answer is no
Thinning hair is usually fine hair, and fine hair is fragile. I look before I promise anything. Sometimes a light lift gives useful body. Sometimes the right answer is no chemistry at all, and I would rather lose the booking than make it worse.
See a doctor first if
- It is coming out fast, in clumps or in patches.
- Your scalp is sore, red, itchy or flaking.
- It started after an illness, a new medicine or a big shock.
- That is a GP or a trichologist, not a hairdresser. Come to me once you know what is going on.
Does perming make thinning worse?
A permUP works on the hair, not on the root that grows it. On hair that can take it, done light, it adds body. On very fine, fragile hair it can make it break, and that is exactly why I read it first and sometimes say no.
Had a transplant?
Transplanted hair often grows back a different texture. That has its own page.
