Bond Builders: Read the Evidence

The short answer

“Bond builder” is a product category, not one shared formula or level of proof. A useful improvement in handling does not establish that damaged hair has returned to its original condition.

Bond builder does not mean one formula or one result. A product can make your hair easier to handle without returning it to untouched hair.

After straightening, perming or bleach

If you want more colour or another texture treatment, I still need the history and a look at the hair. A repair course does not make every chemical combination suitable.

My verdict: enjoy a useful improvement. Do not ask it to erase the past.

First ask what changed

Look at what was measured. Easier combing tells us about handling. Less breakage in a particular test tells us about that test. A shiny photograph cannot prove every broken bond has been rebuilt.

I would not say every repair product does nothing. I would not say they all rebuild everything either. Ask about the actual bottle.

A useful evidence checklist

  1. Was this exact product tested? An ingredient or salon additive is not necessarily the home bottle.
  2. On what hair? Untouched, bleached, permed and straightened hair are different tests.
  3. Compared with what? Nothing, ordinary conditioner or another product?
  4. What happened to the hair? Combing, washing, irons and chemicals ask different things of it.
  5. Who did the test? A manufacturer’s work can be useful. I still want to know who did it and whether others found the same thing.

I have not found a comparison here that ranks every brand. I am not going to make up a winner, a compulsory course or a timetable for every product.

Fit the product into care

Follow its order and timing. Some belong before shampoo, some after. My ordinary mask-first habit does not replace the directions for a specialist product.

Go gently while it’s wet. Hair is especially fragile when it is wet. Squeeze or blot, do not rub, and never pull through a knot.

Rinsed out? That is wash care. Left on for conditioning or styling? Count it towards my maximum of two. Calling it a treatment does not make it an invisible third bottle.

What it cannot decide

It cannot tell me bleached hair is ready for a perm or that more heat is safe. If it keeps snapping, let us assess it before planning the next process.

Reading a repair claim gives my view of the sales promises. Use this page when you are deciding what to buy and where it fits. A helpful product does not need a promise it cannot keep.

Questions

Are all bond builders the same?

No. The ingredients, use and evidence differ.

Does better feel prove restored bonds?

No. Look for a measurement that supports the repair being promised.

Can a repair treatment clear me for bleach?

No. I still need the history, present condition and proposed treatment.

Does a leave-on bond product count as styling care?

Yes, if it is a separate leave-on conditioning or styling product.

Which brand is best?

I have not established a fair ranking of every brand here. Choose a useful job and follow its directions.

What I look for

Before I choose anything, I look at:

  • Your natural pattern.
  • Your condition.
  • Your previous chemical history.
  • Your colour history.
  • What you want the hair to do.
  • How far the hair needs to move.

I use the Zoltan tecSture Scale™ as part of that assessment.

→ How I assess your hair

When I say no

If the hair cannot safely do what you are asking, I say so.

Sometimes it is: No.

Sometimes it is: Not yet.

Sometimes it is: We need to do less.

Sometimes the hair needs repair first.

I would rather lose an appointment than lose your hair.
