Growing Out Straightening

The short answer

Growing out permanent straightening means keeping treated lengths while natural hair grows in. A home rinse or stripping paste does not restore the original texture to those lengths.

Start with the actual service

Some smoothing fades with time. Permanent straightening is different. If you do not know what was used, ask the salon. Do not assume everything called keratin wears off in the same way.

My approach: find a finish you can live with while we change the shape.

Decide what you want to stop doing

Do you want to stop straightening treatments, hot styling at home, or both? You can decide separately. A straighter finish may still need drying while it grows out. If you wear the new curl, the old ends may look different. Neither means you have done it wrong.

I would rather agree on a compromise you can manage than promise perfectly matching roots and ends for almost no work.

A transition wash day

  1. Separate scalp and length needs. Wash the scalp when it needs it. Condition the lengths so they slip past each other.
  2. Work in manageable sections. Start detangling at the ends. Take your time where the texture changes.
  3. Choose one styling direction. Use leave-in and gel to arrange the movement you have, or gentle directional drying with suitable heat protection.
  4. Expect the treated ends to behave differently. Scrunching cannot promise curls where permanent straightening has taken them out. A temporary set may suit your hair, but it is styling, not undoing the treatment.
  5. Keep the leave-on count at two. You do not need a separate collection for roots, middle and ends. Try changing where you put the products first.

Cutting can be gradual

You do not have to decide on one dramatic cut today. We can find a shape that makes the contrast easier and cut gradually if you prefer. Some people want more off at once. There is no single timetable for how you should feel about it or manage it.

Another chemical treatment to blend the join is still another chemical treatment. It needs checking first. Natural roots do not make it an automatically safe way through.

Sleep and morning expectations

Do not lie on the lengths or pull at the hairline. Try a smooth, comfortable surface if it helps. In the morning, tidy only the bits that need it, once your aftercare allows wetting. You do not have to soak and restyle the whole head out of habit.

Keep a useful record

Take pictures of the roots and ends before styling, in similar light. Tell me what was difficult and what you used. That tells me more than unmanageable on its own. Regrowth care covers the roots. Here I want to help you grow it out without treating another permanent process as the default.

Questions

Can I wash permanent straightening out?

I would not rely on that to undo it. Find out what treatment you had and leave harsh stripping recipes alone.

Will gel put my original curls back?

Gel can help hold the movement you have. It cannot promise to undo a permanent change.

Do I need a big cut immediately?

Not necessarily. A gradual cutting plan and a different shape may suit you. Let us look at your hair.

Can I smooth just the roots as a bridge?

That is another chemical decision. I need to check the treatment and history first. It is not an automatic step in growing it out.

Why do the ends stay different?

The old treatment may still be there. New roots do not wipe the history off your ends.

What I look for

Before I choose anything, I look at:

  • Your natural pattern.
  • Your condition.
  • Your previous chemical history.
  • Your colour history.
  • What you want the hair to do.
  • How far the hair needs to move.

I use the Zoltan tecSture Scale™ as part of that assessment.

When I say no

If the hair cannot safely do what you are asking, I say so.

Sometimes it is: No.

Sometimes it is: Not yet.

Sometimes it is: We need to do less.

Sometimes the hair needs repair first.

I would rather lose an appointment than lose your hair.
