Curl Refresh for Days 2–4
The short answer
A refresh is a small styling adjustment between cleanses. It is not a reason to ignore an oily or uncomfortable scalp, and it does not need a new full layer of products every morning.

Perm in London →A refresh means fixing the bit that needs it. It does not mean another full layer of products every morning. If the scalp needs washing, wash it once your treatment allows it.
Fresh treatment first
Do not wet a fresh treatment that needs to stay dry. My Cold and Hot usually need 48 hours without washing. Only use an early Hot refresh if I specifically showed you how for your hair. If you do not know the treatment or timing, check first.
My approach: do less to the parts that still look good.
01. Look before wetting
Look first. Is one curl flattened? Has the whole shape gone? Or are the roots oily and coated? One flattened curl does not need a full wash-day routine. Brushing a dry curl apart does not mean the perm has disappeared.
If it is snapping, the scalp hurts or the shape has changed and stays changed, stop trying more heat or chemicals. Send me pictures. Get medical advice for scalp pain or inflammation.
02. Reshape locally, once allowed
When wetting is allowed, lightly dampen the part that needs reshaping. Smooth or scrunch it back into place. You do not have to soak your whole head.
Try the water first. If the product already there gives enough hold again, stop there. If it needs a little more, use your usual compatible pair. No extra dose just because it is morning.
03. Let the shape dry
Let the shape settle without repeated touching. Dry gently if that suits your treatment and product. Never put ordinary irons on a damp section, including one you have just sprayed with product.
04. Keep the product budget intact
Leave-in and strong-hold gel are my usual two. Adding mousse, oil and spray still makes more products on day three. If it feels coated or the hold has gone wrong, check the amount, the pair and whether it is time for shampoo.
Go gently while it’s wet. Hair is especially fragile when it is wet. Squeeze or blot, do not rub, and never pull through a knot.
05. Make tonight easier
Once your treatment allows it, gather long curls loosely on top of your head with a soft scrunchie. Keep the lengths above the pillow so you are not lying on them. It must not pull your hairline. A comfortable bonnet or scarf is another option. Short curls can stay untied.
“Day 2–4” is a label, not a deadline
Wash when you need to. Sweat, swimming, weather and product can change the gap. If you wet it very often and the scalp still feels clean, consider a fresh-water rinse rather than shampoo every time. Use wash frequency for the scalp and wash day for a fresh start.
Less shampoo, more fun. If your scalp is comfortable, keep shampoo for when you need it. You do not have to wash and start the style again out of habit. Fewer full restyles save time and product, with less drying, heat and handling.
Questions
Can I refresh a fresh Wavement Hot?
Only if I showed you that refresh for your Hot result. Check first if you are unsure.
Should I soak all my hair every morning?
No. Once wetting is allowed, fix the parts that need it.
Do I need more product every day?
No. See what the existing product does with a little water before adding more.
Does day four mean I must wash?
No. The name is a guide to refreshing, not a deadline for your next shampoo.
What if the curl still looks wrong?
Send clear pictures and tell me what you washed with, applied and did to dry it. Do not keep trying more heat or chemicals.
What I look for
Before I choose anything, I look at:
- Your natural pattern.
- Your condition.
- Your previous chemical history.
- Your colour history.
- What you want the hair to do.
- How far the hair needs to move.
I use the Zoltan tecSture Scale™ as part of that assessment.
When I say no
If the hair cannot safely do what you are asking, I say so.
Sometimes it is: No.
Sometimes it is: Not yet.
Sometimes it is: We need to do less.
Sometimes the hair needs repair first.
I would rather lose an appointment than lose your hair.
