Coconut Oil for Hair

The short answer

Coconut oil has relevant laboratory evidence for hair-fibre protection. That is not a claim that it regrows hair, restores virgin structure or makes bleach and swimming harmless.

Coconut oil has some useful lab research on protecting hair. That is not proof of regrowth or a return to untouched hair. It does not make bleach or swimming harmless.

If you have chemically treated lengths

Keep your treatment’s aftercare first. Do not oil up before bleach, straightening or a perm because a washing experiment found a benefit. The product being used and the condition of your hair decide how to prepare it.

My verdict: it can be an option before washing suitable lengths. It is not a compulsory repair ritual.

What the laboratory work addresses

Kaushik and colleagues’ lab research on hair compared coconut and mineral oil during washing and mechanical stress. Coconut oil helped in particular combined-stress measurements. The authors worked with an oil manufacturer’s research centre.

That is useful to know, including who did the work and what they tested. It does not show that every person will do better with oil than conditioner. It does not prove a shop bottle protects your hair from the sun.

I would say the lab work supports some protection of the hair. I would not turn that into clinically proven growth.

If you want to try it

If you have just had a texture treatment, check first. Once you can use ordinary care between visits, choose a product meant for pre-wash use on the lengths. Do not invent a huge amount or an overnight treatment because more sounds better.

If it flattens fine hair, makes the knots harder or irritates your scalp, stop and rethink. A good lab result does not mean you have to like it. You can use conditioner instead.

Four claims I would not make

It will not permanently join split ends. It is not an established growth treatment, a substitute for a suitable heat protector, a tested SPF or a waterproof coating for the pool.

Fractionated coconut or MCT products, scented blends and bottles with a little coconut oil are not automatically what the experiment tested. Read what you are buying.

Count it honestly

Oil you wash out before styling is wash care. Oil you leave on to finish counts as a leave-on product. Leave-in and gel already make two. Calling the extra bottle something else does not make it disappear.

Use the mask and conditioning lesson as your starting point. You do not need an oil and a mask just to feel you have done the routine properly.

Questions

Is coconut oil proven to grow hair?

That lab work tested hair, not regrowth from the scalp. It does not prove regrowth.

Does the washing evidence prove protection during bleach?

No. Bleach is a different test and result. Do not improvise bleaching over oil.

Is overnight always better?

There is no best time for everyone in this research. Follow the intended use rather than guessing longer must be better.

Must everyone use coconut oil?

No. It is optional. How heavy it feels, how the hair handles and scalp comfort matter.

Does a finishing oil count as styling?

Yes. A separate oil you leave on counts towards my maximum of two styling products.

What I look for

Before I choose anything, I look at:

  • Your natural pattern.
  • Your condition.
  • Your previous chemical history.
  • Your colour history.
  • What you want the hair to do.
  • How far the hair needs to move.

I use the Zoltan tecSture Scale™ as part of that assessment.

When I say no

If the hair cannot safely do what you are asking, I say so.

Sometimes it is: No.

Sometimes it is: Not yet.

Sometimes it is: We need to do less.

Sometimes the hair needs repair first.

I would rather lose an appointment than lose your hair.
