Washing and Drying Myths
The short answer
Neither avoiding shampoo nor avoiding every hairdryer is a complete care strategy. Cleanse for the scalp and reduce unnecessary heat, rubbing and pulling.

Keratin treatment in London →Banning shampoo or every hairdryer will not look after everything your hair needs. Wash for your scalp. Keep unnecessary heat, rubbing and pulling down.
Go gently while it’s wet. Hair is especially fragile when it is wet. Squeeze or blot, do not rub, and never pull through a knot.
After your texture service
First, check whether you can wash or wet-style after your treatment. A myths article does not change that waiting period. Once you can, wash and style properly without being rough.
My verdict: know the job you are doing. You do not need a challenge to follow.
“My hair has got used to the shampoo”
A shampoo feeling different does not prove your hair is immune to it. Look at the amount, product left behind, scalp oil, water, weather, colour and handling. If you change everything at once, we cannot tell what helped.
“Daily washing always causes thinning”
How often to wash and why hair falls out are different questions. Some scalps need frequent washing; some do not. Pulling through knots is also quite different from a gentle wash. Persistent hair loss needs a clinician, not an instruction to stop washing.
My frequency guide explains how to decide in real life. It includes clients who wash daily and about monthly. Neither story is a rule for everyone.
“Cold water seals everything shut”
You do not have to be miserable at the basin. Use comfortable water and rinse properly. The temperature does not repair hair permanently. My three-to-five-minute reminder means do not rush, not that science has set a time for every head.
“Air-drying is always healthier”
Air-drying avoids tool heat. A gently moving dryer can be useful too. The relevant lab study found different changes with different drying conditions; it did not pick one method for everyone. Choose the drying route that suits your finish without going to extremes.
“A hundred brush strokes keeps hair healthy”
Brush or comb when it has a job to do. Take knots gently, with enough conditioning slip. Do not keep pulling a brush through resistance to reach a number of strokes, especially on treated hair.
“If the iron sizzles, it is working”
Stop. An ordinary hot iron goes on fully dry hair, with the product used as directed. If you spray on a water-based product, let it dry completely again before ironing. The spray is not permission to use the iron wet.
Wet hair does not give you a viral cold. Dry it for comfort and the finish you want. Keep that old story separate from the real risk of using hot irons on damp hair.
Questions
Does hair become immune to shampoo?
A different result does not prove immunity. Look again at product left behind, your scalp, water and routine.
Must I always shampoo twice?
One is usually enough for me. Repeat if it needs it or the product tells you to.
Can I iron damp hair with protectant?
Not with an ordinary hot iron touching the hair. Dry it completely and follow the product directions.
Does cold water repair the cuticle?
It does not give a permanent repair. Comfortable water and a proper rinse do enough.
Should I stop using a dryer entirely?
Not always. Gentle directional drying can help. Too much heat and repeated correction are what I want to cut down.
What I look for
Before I choose anything, I look at:
- Your natural pattern.
- Your condition.
- Your previous chemical history.
- Your colour history.
- What you want the hair to do.
- How far the hair needs to move.
I use the Zoltan tecSture Scale™ as part of that assessment.
When I say no
If the hair cannot safely do what you are asking, I say so.
Sometimes it is: No.
Sometimes it is: Not yet.
Sometimes it is: We need to do less.
Sometimes the hair needs repair first.
I would rather lose an appointment than lose your hair.
