Conditioner Myths
The short answer
Conditioner is there to make hair more manageable. Longer contact, a colder rinse or a more elaborate protein schedule does not automatically make it better.

If you have had a texture service
Softness and strength are different. A mask can make the hair feel lovely without making another chemical treatment suitable. And do not stop conditioning because a forum calls softness too much moisture.
My verdict: follow the bottle, put it where you need it and see how the hair handles.
How long should it stay on?
Use the time on the bottle. I leave conditioner on while you wash your body because it fits real life. I also like a suitable mask before the shower, because you are more likely to do it. Neither is a reason to sleep in every rinse-out product.
If it is made for a long or overnight treatment, use it that way. Another tub needs its own directions. The word mask does not give every product the same timings.
Roots, ends and rinsing
Fine hair may only need much conditioner towards the ends. Dry curls and treated lengths may need it all through. That is about where you put it. It does not mean conditioner at the roots always makes hair fall out.
Keep ordinary conditioner for the lengths off an irritated scalp, unless it is meant for that use. Rinse dense sections and the nape properly. My three-to-five-minute reminder is for people who rush, not a scientific rule. Use cold water if you like the feel. It does not seal hair permanently.
Co-washing and cleansing
Conditioner does not always wash the same way as a shampoo. If you co-wash, check that your scalp really feels clean and comfortable. Oil, product and scalp treatments may still call for shampoo. I do not tell everyone to avoid shampoo, or to shampoo twice every time.
Go gently while it’s wet. Hair is especially fragile when it is wet. Squeeze or blot, do not rub, and never pull through a knot.
What about protein overload?
People often use protein overload to mean stiff, rough or tangly hair. I want to know about those changes. They do not prove you have measured too much protein in the hair. Heat, chemicals, residue and the wrong product can all be involved.
Stop using what seems to make it worse. Keep the routine simple and have a look at the cause. Do not pile on moisture products to fix a protein problem you have guessed at. Another smoothing treatment is a separate chemical decision, not the same as a protein conditioner.
Rinse-out, leave-in and gel
I usually use a leave-in after rinsing out the conditioner. For curls, I mix it with strong gel in my hands just before applying. Choose a pair that works together and do not store the mix. Both count towards the two-product limit. A separate heat protector is another question. Mixing it does not prove it still gives the protection on the bottle.
Questions
Is overnight always better?
No. Leave it on longer only if the directions say you can.
Should conditioner never touch roots?
It depends on the product and your hair and scalp. Do not put an ordinary conditioner for lengths on an irritated scalp unless it is made for that.
Does cold water permanently seal hair?
I would not count on that. Use water you find comfortable and rinse properly.
Is protein overload a diagnosis?
No. It is a name people give to a feel, often stiffness or roughness. Find out which product and what else might be causing it.
Must I layer leave-in and gel instead of mixing?
Mixing is my usual method. Use a pair that works together, mix it just before applying and do not store it. The mix alone does not prove heat protection.
What I look for
Before I choose anything, I look at:
- Your natural pattern.
- Your condition.
- Your previous chemical history.
- Your colour history.
- What you want the hair to do.
- How far the hair needs to move.
I use the Zoltan tecSture Scale™ as part of that assessment.
When I say no
If the hair cannot safely do what you are asking, I say so.
Sometimes it is: No.
Sometimes it is: Not yet.
Sometimes it is: We need to do less.
Sometimes the hair needs repair first.
I would rather lose an appointment than lose your hair.
