Henna and Texture Treatments

Zoltan Vargyai · perming since 1991

The short answer

“Henna” can describe different products. Pure henna, a blended hair colour and something sold as black henna are not interchangeable, and the name alone cannot clear hair for perming, straightening or bleach.

Henna on a packet is not enough information. Pure henna, blended hair colour and black henna can be different products. The name does not tell me whether your hair can take a perm, straightening or bleach.

If you have used it before a texture appointment

Tell me you used it. Bring the packet, ingredients and dates if you have them, including what went on the old lengths. Natural colour still counts in the hair’s history.

My approach: find out what was used, then test the combination where needed.

Natural is not a compatibility test

I want to know what went on and what is still on the lengths. Plant colour can last. Unknown blends, extra colourants and gaps in the history need care. A few weeks of washing do not automatically wipe them away.

I will not tell everyone who has ever used pure henna that they can never have another treatment. I will not say every blend is compatible, either. I need the product, history, manufacturer’s advice and the hair in front of me.

Black henna and allergy

The NHS warns about black-henna tattoos and PPD sensitisation. Tell me about an old skin reaction before discussing more colour. Dark-looking does not prove a harmless plant product.

A home patch test does not promise that every future use is safe. It is not a strand test, either. Skin allergy and how hair takes a chemical treatment are different questions. Follow the product and clinician’s advice.

What to bring to an assessment

  1. The packaging or a clear ingredient photo. That tells me more than a roughly remembered name.
  2. Where it went. Tell me about roots, ends, whole-head colour and repeated applications.
  3. Any later colour, bleach or straightening. I need the whole history.
  4. Any reaction. Tell me about itching, swelling, blistering or an earlier allergy.
  5. The result you want. Lighter colour, less curl and a new perm are different jobs.

If the history is missing

If we do not know, we do not know. I may need to wait or say no. Do not try to prepare for the appointment with washing-up liquid, bicarbonate or repeated bleaching to strip the colour.

Get medical advice for a painful reaction. Difficulty breathing or major swelling of the face or throat is an emergency. Do not wait for the salon to reply.

Questions

Is pure henna the same as black henna?

No. Names and blends vary. Find out the ingredients rather than trust the label on the front.

Can I perm hair that has had henna?

I need to check the product, history, hair and treatment being proposed. There is no automatic yes or lifelong ban here.

Does a skin patch test prove hair compatibility?

No. A skin allergy test and a test of what your hair can take answer different questions.

What if I no longer have the packet?

Tell me. Not knowing can limit what I can do, and I need to know about that gap.

Can I strip it out at home first?

Do not use harsh stripping methods or more bleach to prepare for a texture appointment. Tell me the history first.

What I look for

Before I choose anything, I look at:

  • Your natural pattern.
  • Your condition.
  • Your previous chemical history.
  • Your colour history.
  • What you want the hair to do.
  • How far the hair needs to move.

I use the Zoltan tecSture Scale™ as part of that assessment.

When I say no

If the hair cannot safely do what you are asking, I say so.

Sometimes it is: No.

Sometimes it is: Not yet.

Sometimes it is: We need to do less.

Sometimes the hair needs repair first.

I would rather lose an appointment than lose your hair.
